Mod10 ResistanceinParallelCircuitsOnlineLab

The document outlines an online lab assignment on resistance in parallel circuits, detailing the creation of a parallel circuit and calculations for current, voltage, and resistance. It includes data tables for circuits with varying numbers of resistors and compares equivalent resistance in parallel and series circuits. The overall equivalent resistance in parallel is consistently smaller than individual resistances, contrasting with series circuits where it is larger.

Resistance in Parallel Circuits Online Lab

Part 1: Creating a Parallel Circuit

1. Explain why the first circuit made is a series circuit and not a parallel circuit.

The first circuit made is a series circuit because there is only one path for the current to flow.

2. Describe how the current flows through this circuit.

There are two paths for the current to flow through in this circuit.

3. What is the current flowing through each of the lightbulbs?

Both currents are 0.90 A

4. What is the total current flowing in the circuit?

1.80 A

5. What is the voltage of the circuit?

9.00 V

6. What is the voltage of each lightbulb?

The voltage of each lightbulb is 9.00 V

7. Show your work for the calculation of the resistance of the first lightbulb.

V = IR
9.00V = 0.90A * R
R = 10

8. Show your work for the calculation of the resistance of the second lightbulb.

V = IR
9.00V = 0.90A * R
R = 10

9. Show your work for the calculation of the resistance of the entire circuit.

1/Req = 1/10 + 1/10

1/Req = 2/10 = 1/5
1/Req = 5 ohms

Part 2: Calculating Equivalent Resistance

10. Data Table for Circuit with 2 Resistors

Resistor Resistance (Ω) Current (A) Voltage (V)

1 10

2 20

Overall 6.666 1.35 9.00

2 20

3 30

4 40

Overall 4.81 1.87 9.00

13. How does the overall or equivalent resistance compare to the individual resistances?
How does this compare to the equivalent resistance in series circuits?

The overall or equivalent resistance is always smaller than the individual resistances in
parallel circuits. Whereas, in series circuits the overall or equivalent resistance is always
larger than the individual resistances.

14. Calculate the equivalent resistance for each of the parallel circuits created, using
the information from the data tables in Questions 10, 11, and 12.
Question 10: Question 11: Question 12:
1/Req = 1/R1 + 1/R2 1/Req = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 1/Req = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 +
1/R4
1/Req = 1/10 + 1/20 1/Req = 1/10 + 1/20 + 1/30
1/Req = 1/10 + 1/20 + 1/30 +
1/Req = 3/20 1/Req = 11/60 1/40

Req = 6.66 Req = 5.454545 1/Req = 5/24

Req = 4.81
