3. _____F______ Energy is used up by some things.

4. ____F_______ Energy can’t be transferred to the surrounding environment

5. ____T_______ When we turn the switch on, the circuit is closed.

6. ____T_______ When we turn the switch off, the circuit is open.

3
Part 2- Application:

A. Look at the two circuits.

1. Circle the circuit where lamps will light up when the switch is closed.

2. Explain your answer:

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

The left circuit is complete, so when the switch is closed, the electric current can flow all the
way through. This will make the lamps light up.
The right circuit has an open wire that is not connected, so the circuit is incomplete. That
means the current cannot flow, and the lamps will not light up.

4
B. Circle the energy found in each of the following

A boiling kettle A violin producing A shining torch A bell ringing

music

Heat Heat
Heat
Light Heat Light
Light
Sound Light Sound
Sound
Sound (Heat is acceptable)

C. Since all matter contains energy, energy is found everywhere around us.
Can you name two types of energy and give one example for each?

1. Heat energy → Example: The Sun

2. Sound energy → Example: A ringing phone
3. Light Energy → Example: A torch (switched on)
Accept any reasonable answer.

5
D. The picture shows a boy playing drums.

Fill in the blanks. Use words from the boxes.

louder more move sound

Energy is needed to _____move______________ the sticks. When the sticks hit the drums,
there will be ____sound_________________. If you hit the drums harder, there is
________more_____________ energy transferred, and the sound will be
____________louder_________.

6
E. The picture below shows a kettle filled with water placed over a stove.
Tick the two correct answers.

a. All the energy from the fire is transferred to the water.

b. Energy is transferred from the cooler object to the hotter object.

c. Energy is transferred from the fire to the kettle.

d. Some energy from the fire is transferred to the surrounding environment as light.

7
F. The picture below shows a person playing baseball. Tick the statements that are correct.

a. Energy is destroyed when the bat hits the ball.

b. Energy is needed to make the bat swing.

c. Energy is transferred from the ball to the bat.

d. Some energy is transferred to the surrounding environment as sound when the bat
hits the ball.

G. Use the following components: a cell, a lamp, a switch, and connecting wires.
1. Draw two circuits:
● Circuit A: A closed circuit with one cell,
one lamp, and a tuned-on switch.

8
● Circuit B: A circuit with one cell, two
lamps, and a tuned off switch.

2. What is the difference between Circuit A and Circuit B?

Circuit A is a closed circuit, so the lamp will light up because the switch is turned on and allows
electric current to flow. It has one lamp and one cell.
Circuit B is an open circuit because the switch is turned off, so the lamps will not light up. It has
two lamps and one cell, but no current can flow.

3. What do you think will happen to the lamps in Circuit B when the switch is closed?
(Think about whether the lamps will light up or not and why.)
When the switch in Circuit B is closed, the lamps will light up because the circuit becomes

complete. However, since there is only one cell and two lamps, the brightness of each lamp

may be less than in a circuit with only one lamp.

4. What do you think will happen if we add one more lamp to Circuit B after closing the
switch? Will the brightness of the lamps change?
If we add one more lamp to Circuit B, the brightness of all the lamps will decrease. This is
because the same amount of energy from the single cell will have to be shared between more
lamps, so each gets less energy.

5. What do you think will happen if we add one more cell to Circuit B after closing the switch?
How might the lamps behave?
If we add another cell, the lamps will get more energy. This will make the lamps brighter
because there is more power available to push the current through the circuit.

2
H. Circle the statement that does NOT explain what happens to the energy from the moving

wheels of an airplane or a hairdryer.

a) Energy is transferred to heat and sound.

b) Energy is used to help the object do its job.
c) Energy disappears and is no longer anywhere.
d) Energy is transferred to the surroundings.

Explanation:

Energy cannot disappear. It can only be transformed or transferred to other objects or the
surroundings. The other statements correctly describe how energy behaves.

Part 3- Reasoning:

A. Ali wanted to test how the strength of a push affects how far and fast a car moves. He

used two toy cars of the same size and shape. He gave the first car a gentle push and the

second one a strong push. Which car do you think went further and faster? Explain your

answer and why this is a fair test.

The second car went further and faster because it got more energy from the stronger

push. More energy makes things move faster and travel a longer distance. This is a fair

test because both cars were the same size and shape, and the only thing that changed

was how hard they were pushed.

B. Complete the following activity to test how changing different components in a circuit
affects the brightness of the lamp(s) This is the control Set-up.

2
1. Identify and record the variable that is changed for each circuit compared to the control
circuit and describe what happens to the lamp

Circuit Variable Changed Lamp Brightness (Bright /

(Independent Variable) Dim/Brighter/Dimmer)

(Independent /observed Variable)

A new lamp was added Dim

(The current is shared between two

lamps)

Two lamps were added Dimmer

A cell was added Bright

3
Two more cells were Brighter

added (more power to the lamp)

2. Sarah uses one big lamp and one small lamp to build circuit A. She says that it is a fair test
because the number of lamps used is still two. Is she correct? Justify your answer.

No, Sarah is not correct.

Even though she used two lamps, they are not the same type. One is big and one is small, and
they may need different amounts of energy to light up. That means they won't behave the
same in the circuit, which makes it an unfair test.
In a fair test, all the conditions except one (the independent variable) should stay the same.
Using different types of lamps changes more than one thing, so the results wouldn’t be fair or
accurate.

C. Saeed is helping his father build a wooden shelf. He uses a hammer to push nails into the
wood. His sister, who has recently been studying energy transfer, watches and says:
“The energy starts in the nail and then moves to the hammer and finally goes to Ali’s
arm.”
1. Do you agree with Saeed’s sister’s explanation?
_____________________________________________________________________________
2. Explain your answer and describe the correct path of energy transfer in this situation.
______________________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________________

1. No, I do not agree with Ali’s sister’s explanation.

2. The energy does not start in the nail. The correct path of energy transfer is:
Ali’s arm → Hammer → Nail
● The energy starts in Ali’s arm when he moves it.
● It is transferred to the hammer when he swings it.
● Then the hammer gives energy to the nail, which moves into the wood.
