Shear and Bending Diagram Worksheet
Shear and Bending Diagram Worksheet
Draw the shear and bending-moment diagrams for the beam and loading shown, and
determine the maximum absolute value of (a) the shear, (b) the bending moment.
3. Calculate the shear force V and bending moment M at a cross section just to the left of the
7.0 kN load acting on the simple beam AB shown in the figure
4. Determine the shear force V and bending moment M at the midpoint C of the simple
beam AB shown in the figure
5. Under cruising conditions the distributed load acting on the wing of a small airplane has
the idealized variation shown in the figure. Calculate the shear force V and bending
moment M at the inboard end of the wing.
6. Express the shear and moment functions in terms of x, and then draw the shear and
moment diagrams for the cantilever beam.
7. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the simply supported beam.
8. Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the double overhang beam.
9. If the beam is subjected to a bending moment of M = 20 kNm. determine the maximum bending stress in the beam.
10. If the beam is subjected to a bending moment of M = 50 kNm, determine the maximum bending stress in the beam.
11. The rod is supported by smooth journal bearings at A and B that only exert vertical
reactions on the shaft. Determine its smallest diameter d if the allowable bending stress is
σallow = 180 MPa.
12. The shaft is supported by a smooth thrust bearing at A and smooth journal bearing at D. If
the shaft has the cross section shown, determine the absolute maximum bending stress in
the shaft.
13. Calculate the maximum shear stress τ max and the maximum bending stress σmax in a
wood beam (see figure) carrying a uniform load of 22.5 kN/m (which includes the weight
of the beam) if the length is 1.95 m and the cross section is rectangular with width 150
mm and height 300 mm, and the beam is either (a) simply supported as in the figure part
a, or (b) has a sliding support at right as in the figure part b.
14. A bridge girder AB on a simple span of length L=14 m supports a distributed load of
maximum intensity q at mid-span and minimum intensity q/2 at supports A and B that
includes the weight of the girder (see figure). The girder is constructed of three plates
welded to form the cross section shown. Determine the maximum permissible load q
based upon (a) an allowable bending stress σallow = 110 MPa and (b) an allowable shear
stress τallow=50 MPa.
