System Settings: Please modify these values according to your system:
Test Object: Test Object serves as test parameter management tool. In Test Object you browse,
access and edit the contents of the test object parameters.
In the impedance plane, the "line angle" helps to define faults without any arc resistance. The line angle is
also used to determine the impedance tolerance band.
The location of the potential transformers and the grounding of the current transformer determine the
presence of voltage in the postfault state and the direction of current flow.
You can specify the "line length" in ohms. The line length is used for relative shots in Advanced Distance.
The test object can be saved by exporting it like shown in the figure below.
After entering all the data, confirming those values is done by pressing OK. Now the
Hardware Configuration
To define the test-specific hardware settings, a configuration module named Hardware Configuration is
used. In the Hardware Configuration the user defines the combination of outputs and/ or inputs he wants
to use for a specific test. Furthermore, the Hardware Configuration automatically documents the wiring
information for the test. This way, an existing test file can additionally be used for test instructions for that
particular test.
The Hardware Configuration allows you to select the test hardware you want to use for the test without
the necessity to physically connect any test hardware to the PC. This enables you to fully prepare a test in
the office.
On the General tab of the Hardware Configuration dialog box the used test hardware is specified.
If the serial number of a connected test set is not yet known by the software, question marks are displayed
instead of the serial number. This could for instance be the case if the software is in offline mode (no test
set connected or the connected test set is switched off).
In this dialog box the configuration of the selected CMC test set can be changed. The image in the middle
of the dialog box shows how to connect the outputs in order to achieve the desired configuration.
Analog Outputs: On the Analog Outputs tab you define the usage of the analog outputs. The available
outputs displayed here depend on the test hardware definition in the General tab.
In this window you find 3 main columns beside the currents and voltages banks which are:
Test Module Output Signal: This column is not available in the global hardware configuration.
In the "Test Module Output Signal" column the output signal of the test module is assigned to the
test object terminal specified in this line. The selection menu only allows signals that an
individual test module knows about and that are appropriate for the wired connector.
Display Name: The display name is the designation of the connection between the test hardware
connectors and the test object terminals.
Connection Terminal: In the Connection Terminal column you can enter the names of the test
object's connectors. This information increases the usefulness of the Hardware Configuration and
can improve the quality of the test report. It is recommended to use it, but it is optional and can
also be left blank.
Binary / Analog Inputs
In the heading area of the wiring matrix the test set information is displayed (test set type, offline or online
state, input configuration, connector). The cells for the input configuration are arranged in 4 or 5 lines as
following:
Function: this can be switched between analog inputs, analog current inputs and counter inputs.
Potential Free: Check this checkbox for potential-free binary or counter inputs. If it is unchecked the
input is potential-sensing.
Nominal Range: Nominal voltage of potential-sensing binary or counter inputs, or the nominal range of
analog voltage or analog current inputs.
Clamp Ratio (CMC 256/CMC 256plus/CMC 356 only): Clamp ratio for current inputs (V/A).
Threshold: Threshold voltage for potential-sensing binary or counter inputs.
Binary Outputs
On the Binary Outputs tab the usage of the binary outputs is defined.
In the Binary Outputs tab all available binary outputs are displayed according to the test hardware
definition in the General tab.
After setting all the parameters of the Hardware Configuration, it is possible to save it also by exporting it
as you can see in the figure below.
You can find this option in the General tab of the Hardware Configuration.

The Test View is the main view to specify all required test parameters, i.e., the CMC test set's Analog and
Binary Output signals as well as the usage of the CMC inputs. Here you also turn the CMC outputs on/off
and activate the Prefault.
1: The values you specify here for amplitude, phase, frequency etc. are output to the protection relay
connected to your CMC test set when you click the "F5 Outputs ON/OFF" button. If the cells for
the three phase currents show the symbol right next to IL1 … 3, the phases of the corresponding
true CMC output currents are 180° reversed due to the setting "CT starpoint: Dir.
busbar".
2: In the vector view, the given signals with its values and angles will be drawn. The way of viewing
it depends on the Set Mode either Direct or Line-Line or Symmetrical components …etc..
3: Each one of the 8 binary Outputs available on your CMC test set can be set to OFF or to ON. An
OFF output (check box clear) provides a binary "0" signal to the connected test object, and an ON
output (check box selected) provides a binary "1" signal.
4: Binary Inputs/Trigger displays the status of the routed binary inputs of the CMC test set. The
number of available binary inputs and their routing are defined in the Hardware Configuration.
The "LEDs" of the Binary Inputs/Trigger box display the current signal state of the 10 inputs; red
= signal, white = no signal at input.
5: "F5 Outputs ON/OFF" starts the fault inception. It applies the set fault values to the CMC test
set's analog outputs and turns ON all selected binary outputs. A red lightning symbol next to the
button signifies the active outputs. De-activating "F5 Outputs ON/OFF" turns off the analog and
binary outputs. A transparent lightning symbol next to the button signifies the OFF condition.
"F5" denotes that your keyboard's function key <F5> fulfills the same task as clicking the button.
6: "F8 Set Prefault" applies a prefault state to the CMC test set's outputs. For the analog outputs,
prefault is defined as V = Vnom (as set at "Vnom secondary" on the Test Object's Device Settings
page) and I = 0A . This applies to V L1-N, V L2-N, V L3-N, V Fault and I L1, I L2, I L3, I Fault.
7: As long as the analog outputs are switched on ("F5 Outputs ON/OFF"), any change of an analog
output value and/or a binary output state is applied instantly. Activating "F9 Hold", however,
allows you to change multiple analog values and/or binary output states that will not be applied to
the outputs until you click "F9 Hold" once more to release it.
8: Using QuickCMC's Step / Ramp functionality lets you do basic pick-up/drop-off testing or trip
time testing of all protection functions while directly supporting power and distance functions.
Depending on the selected set mode of the multifunctional input grid, you can ramp relevant
quantities of output voltages, currents, powers and impedances.
9: Clicking the "F10 Add to Report" button adds all data and current values at the time the trigger
signal occurred at a binary input to the test report. Before this step is added to the test report, a
dialog box lets you name and manually assess this step, and add a comment, if applicable.
Depending on the test module, the Vector View varies in appearance and functionality. Therefore, not
every feature mentioned here might be available at all times. In some test modules, the Vector View is a
read-only view, i.e., values cannot be changed.
All test modules that have a Vector View display a vector diagram. Some test modules provide an
additional table showing the available test parameters, which - again depending on the test module - are
either displayed as read-only or displayed and editable.
.Report View
A test module automatically generates a report once a test is executed. The Report View displays this test
report. Per test module, OMICRON provides a test report template that is automatically installed with the
Test Universe software. This template contains two pre-defined test report forms, a "short form" and a
long form". These two forms differ in the number of selected blocks and items that will later appear in the
final test report.
Hold Values As long as the analog outputs are switched on ("F5 Outputs
ON/OFF"), any change of an analog output value and/or a
binary output state is applied instantly. Activating "F9 Hold",
however, allows you to change multiple analog values and/or
binary output states that will not be applied to the outputs until
you click "F9 Hold" once more to release it.
Add to report To add test result in the report. Press F10. It reduces our
Paper/pen Use. There is no limit for number of tests.
Play/Pause/Stop These are common buttons to inject the fault in all modules
other then Quick CMC. Like Ramping, State Sequencer etc.
Step1: Enter voltages and Currents, [Magnitude, Phase angle, and frequency] (Fig a)

Case: let assume our previous condition is nominal voltage and nominal current as describe below:
Procedure:
1. Enter first condition of Voltages and currents as shown below
Then press F5
2. Now wait for some time or according to requirement and press F9
Now output window is available to change all outputs as required. So now we can change all values.
Then press
2. Over Current: to test the over current relay, first we have to enter magnitude of the fault
current (higher than the relay settings 2X, 4X, 6X, 8X and 10X).
Please wait for trip and after Press F10. Then chagne
the Value of the current output for next fault.
3. Under Voltage and Over Voltage test: for Under/Over Testing, we can use Ramping
Option in Quick CMC.
After that press F5. Start Ramping, after that to save result please press F10.
4. Under Frequency/Over Frequency: it is similar like O/U voltage test.
5. Distance Relay Testing in Quick CMC: for distance relay testing, please select Z-I const.
Few things for Z-I const.
Set Mode: Z-I const
Fault Type: L-N or L-L, or L-L-L

For distance relay, we can also create relay characteristics with the help of RIO/XRIO
/Digsi /Z graph file.
Now click in the Charecterstics to select the location to inject the fault.
Press F5 and after trip signal, press F10.
Fault locator testing: for fault location testing, please Select Z%-I const. But please
remember, we have to define exact line length in Test Object (O)
State Sequencer
For testing with the help of OMICRON Test Universe Software, recall the OHM law. But meaning of the
OHM law is different in this case.
O→ Object—Tool to define test objects, like Name, serial number, location and characteristics etc.
Here we can use RIO or XRIO. But XRIO is more powerful.
H → Hardware Configuration─ Tool to configure Hardware (CMCX56) according to the requirement of
the Test Object like relay, Transducer, Energy meter etc.
M→ Module→ Tool to define the Test conditions or simulate the fault conditions.

ment
To simplify simulation of fault conditions, Module (M) also have three parts: TDM
Fig 1: Table, Detail and measurement view of the State Sequencer module.
1. Analog Output—to define the fault voltage and currents in different Modes
2. Binary Output—to activate the binary outputs for Simulation of some external signals for Relays
Input.
3. Trigger—to define the stop condition of each state.
4. General—to define starting condition of the each state.
Analog Output: In this part, we can define the test as per the relay (test points) requirements.
For example, to define an Impedance fault, we can select Z-I const mode or Z-V const mode.
For a symmetrical components fault, we can use Symmetrical components Mode. Etc (Fig 3)
Binary Out: Here we can select any Binary output to simulate any external signal as input to the relay.
For example, CB status, Carrier Signal etc. (Fig 4). To change the name of Binary output, please use
Hardware Check Configuration.
Trigger: In his Tab, we can define the condition of termination of each state. Possible options are:-
1. Binary inputs (s) and/or timeout: Here we can define state termination on the basic of the time,
on the basis of trigger conditions like trip, and
with both conditions. In case of Binary Trigger,
we can define nature of trip contact of the relay.
2. User Interaction: In this Option, user is
authorized to terminate the state as per his
requirement. This option is very useful to pause
the sequence to change the setting or connection
in the relay.
3. Pulse from CMGPS… State also can terminate
from the CMGPS signal.
4. IRIG-B Pulses… Termination of the state after
number of IRIG-B pluses.
5. Delay after trigger: we can set time duration to
continuous injection of fault even after trip
signal. This will help us to check our backup
protection.
6. Binary Trigger Condition: we can define trip
condition like from NO-NC or NC-NO. Here we
can define different binary signals from relay. We also can define Trigger logic according to the
relay.
Measurement view: Here we can measure the trip time at different states. We can also measure
the duration of the change of the states.
7. Assessment: if green then everything is perfect. If red then test is failed according to our test
conditions.
8. Level Assess: here we can monitor the trip contact in all states.
TDM is a Close Cycle for State Sequencer. Please keep this cycle in
mind for each state.
Ramping: The test module Ramping defines a variety of ramping tests for CMC test
sets. Its main field of application is the measurement and assessment of threshold values.
What is Ramp: A ramp is defined the linear change of one physical quantity (current or voltage
magnitude, phase angle, frequency, impedances, and so on). It is a step-shaped signal form whose
differential change is determined by the user-defined values for step size( Δ) and step time (Δt).
Fig: Ramp1
To perform any test in Ramping Module again we have OHM as in previous modules and again we have
TDM but here T refer test, D refer Detail and M refer measurement.

Test View: Test view is to define the test(s). For Example to test Over and Under Voltage function of
a relay.
1. Set Mode: Here in set mode, we can select different mode for ramping according to requirement
of the relay. Few basic options in Set mode is Direct, Power, Symmetrical Component, Z-Iconst.,
Z-Vconst etc. All available modes are similar like in Quick CMC and State sequencer.
2. Signal 1 & Singal 2 (2, 4): In case of Direct Mode, Options in Signal 1 and in Signal 2 are all
voltages and Currents with different combinations.
3. Function 1 & Function 2 (3, 5): Again, if mode is direct then, functions are Magnitude, Phase
and Frequency.
4. From (7): Minimum value for starting a ramp. For example for Under voltage, it will Nominal
value of PT. here we can enter any value depend upon the requirement.
5. To (8): End limit of the ramping. Again its value depends upon the type of function. If we
consider under voltage testing example, then this value will be lesser than setting of the relay.
6. Delta (9): Change in function with each step. Size of the step is depends upon this value. If it is
very less, then result will very accurate but it take lot of time to test a function.
7. dt (10): change in the magnitude with respect to this value. But remember that this size should
higher than the trip of the relay.
8. Stop Condition (11): this stop condition is to stop the ramp. Here we can’t define this. To define
a stop condition, please go to the Detail view.
For Currents:
1 Amp CT 5 Amps CT
R==> Phase-3, Neutral-2 R==> Phase-1, Neutral-2
Y==> Phase-6, Neutral-5 Y==> Phase-4, Neutral-5
B==> Phase-9, Neutral-8 B==> Phase-7, Neutral-8
For Voltage:
Aux DC Connections:
Procedure:
Connect Relay test kit with Laptop and switch on Power Supply of Test Kit.(in Offline mode
also possible) you can create test template in offline mode also. And it is best way to perform
testing.
7. Select the test Points: Please Hold the Ctrl key then click at the graph. For fault type
selection, please select one by one and repeat same procedure for each fault type.

of key board and click in the characteristics area. And then press run button.
For testing of the relays, complicated part of testing is to create relays characteristics. Here
OMICON Have some innovative solutions. That knows as XRIO. With the help of XRIO, we can
create characteristics of the relay with the help of setting of the relay but without any calculations.
Here we have list of available XRIO. We are updating this list time by time. So for all latest updates,
please go through to the list.
