The Little Red Hen

Once upon a time, there was a little red hen who lived on a farm. She was friends with a lazy dog, a
sleepy cat, and a noisy yellow duck.

One day, the little red hen found some seeds on the ground.

"Who will plant these seeds?" asked the little red hen.

"Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the cat. "Not I," said the duck.

"Then I will plant them myself," said the little red hen. And she did.

The seeds grew and grew. Soon, the little red hen had stalks of golden wheat.

"Who will help me cut the wheat?" asked the little red hen.

"Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the cat. "Not I," said the duck.

"Then I will cut it myself," said the little red hen. And she did.

When the wheat was cut, the little red hen said, "Who will help me take the wheat to the mill to be ground
into flour?"

"Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the cat. "Not I," said the duck.

"Then I will take it myself," said the little red hen. And she did.

The little red hen returned from the mill with a sack of fine white flour.

"Who will help me bake the bread?" asked the little red hen.

"Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the cat. "Not I," said the duck.

"Then I will bake it myself," said the little red hen. And she did.

Soon, the bread was ready. The smell of fresh bread filled the air. The dog, the cat, and the duck could
smell the bread, and they came running.

"Who will help me eat the bread?" asked the little red hen.

"I will!" said the dog. "I will!" said the cat. "I will!" said the duck.

"No," said the little red hen. "I will eat it myself."

And she did. She ate the bread all by herself.

And from that day on, the dog, the cat, and the duck always helped with the work.
