DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MECHANICS

Course: AML151 Engineering Mechanics

Assignment # 04
Date of Display: 27/04/2021 Maximum Marks: 10
Date of Submission: 04/05/2021 Instructor: Dr. Sachin Bakre & Dr. Sonal Dhanvijay

Q1. A mass m, 300kg, is supported by a boom. Determine the tensile force in the cable
and the reaction A. The cable is horizontal. Fig 1.

Fig 1. Fig 2.

Q2. A uniform rod AB having a weight of 20N and a length of 500mm is free to slide
within a vertical slot at A. A rope supports the rod at B. For the situation shown in Fig 2,
determine the angle of rope and the tension in the rope.

Q3. Two cylinders of masses 75kg and 50 kg are connected by a rigid bar AB of negligible
weight both the cylinders are hinged at the ends of the bar. The cylinders rest on
inclined planes under the action of a force F applied on cylinder B. The surfaces of the
inclined planes are smooth. Determine the magnitude of the force F. Fig 3.

Q4. A ball and socket joint and two guy wire support a mast. Findthe magnitude of the
force at A if F =2600 ı ͂ (N) and P=1800 k (N).Fig 4.

Q5. A bent rod as shown in the Fig 5., supports two weight one at the centre of AD and
one at the centre of DG. There are ball and socket joint supports at A and B. Determine
the tension in cable DC.

Fig 5.

Q6. Two cables support a rod that comes to a ball and socket support at A and supports
a body of weight 5kN, as shown in the Fig 6. Find out the tensions in the cable and the
supporting force at A?
