2. Rationale for Module and its links with other Modules

In this module, after building up some vocabulary in the language, we will be focusing on the
introductory rules of Sarf (Morphology) and Nahwu (Grammar), how to identify the root letters of
words and find them in a dictionary, and how to distinguish between the types of sentences, the student
will be enabled to attempt to read classical Arabic texts independently.

Sarf (Morphology) is the understanding that all Arabic words stem from root letters and that when
additional letters are added to these root letters, or a change in harakat (vowels) within these root
letters occur, then it changes its meaning. This module will focus more on the morphology of verbs
than nouns.
Nahwu (Grammar) focuses on the functions of words in sentences and their case endings.
This module will concentrate mostly on the grammar of nouns than verbs.

There are two main types of sentences in the Arabic language – ‫( جملة فعلية‬Verbal Sentence) and ‫اسمية‬
‫ ( جملة‬Nominal Sentence). Being able to recognise the two sentences will guide the student in
determining the functions of words in the sentences and their case endings, leading them to a sound
understanding and potentially translation of any text.

The study of Arabic is the foundation to accessing the Islamic legacy. If a student masters this
understanding, together with a dictionary, then he/she would be able to navigate through any genre of
Arabic text, but more specifically, eventually be able to access the traditional Arabic books read in the
other sciences and modules such as Aqeedah, Fiqh and Seerah, etc.

3. Aims of the Module

1. Strengthen the reading ability of students.
2. Introduce the student to Sarf (Morphology) and how to conjugate it into different forms.
3. Introduce the student to basic rules of Nahw (Grammar) and how to apply them.
4. Develop the understanding of root-letters and the skill of using Arabic dictionaries.
5. Encourage students to use their grammatical and morphological analytical skills when reading
the Quran and other Arabic texts.
6. Enrich students’ vocabulary to assist them in understanding and engaging with texts in the
other subjects.
