1. Among 157 men, the mean systolic blood pressure was 146 mm Hg with a standard
deviation of 27. We wish to know if on the basis of these data, we may conclude that
the mean systolic blood pressure for a population is greater than 140. Use α=0.01.
(Z=2.78)
2. A light bulb company claims that the 100-watt light bulb it sells has an average life of
1200 hours with a standard deviation of 100 hours. For testing the claim 50 new bulbs
were selected randomly and allowed to burn out. The average lifetime of these bulbs
was found to be 1180 hours. Is the company’s claim is true at 5% level of significance?
Also check your decision based on p-value and confidence interval.
3. From the following data, obtained from a sample of 1000 persons, Calculate the
standard error of the mean.
Earnings (in Rs.) 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70 70-80
No. of persons 50 100 150 200 200 100 100 100
If the average of the population was Rs. 42, what conclusion can you arrive at about the
reliability of the sample. (Z=-1.64)
4. Is it likely that a sample of size 300 whose mean is 12, is a random sample from a large
population with mean 12.8 and S.D 5.2? (Z=3.33)
5. A sample of 900 members has a mean 3.4 cm and SD 2.61cm. Is the sample from a large
population of mean 3.25cm and SD 2.61cm. If the population is normal and the mean is
unknown, find the 95% confidence limits for the mean. (Z = 1.724)
6. Two brands of electric bulbs are quoted at the same price. A buyer was tested a random
sample of 200 bulbs of each brand and found the following information:
Mean Life (hrs.) SD(hrs.)
Brand A 1300 41
Brand B 1280 46
Is there significant difference in the mean duration of their lives of two brands of
electric bulbs at 1% level of significance? (Z=4.59)
7. In a survey of buying habits, 400 women shoppers are chosen at random in supermarket
A. Their average weekly food expenditure is Rs.250 with standard deviation Rs.40. For
400 women shoppers chosen at random in supermarket B, the average weekly food
expenditure is Rs.220 with standard deviation is Rs.55. Test at 1% level of significance
whether the average weekly food expenditure of the populations of shoppers is equal.
(z = 8.82)
8. There are two brands of car tyres A and B in the market. A sample of 100 tyres of brand
A has an average life of 37500 km with a standard deviation of 2500km. Another sample
of 75 tyres of brand B has an average life of 39000km with a standard deviation of
3000km. Can we conclude that brand B is better than brand A? (Z=3.5)
9. The population proportion is expected to be around 0.7. Find the sample size needed to
estimate the proportion within 0:02 with confidence level of 90%. (n = 1421 approx)
10.A die is thrown 9000 times and throw of 3 or 4 is observed 3240 times. Show that the
die cannot be regarded as an unbiased one. (Z=5.37)
11.A random sample of 500 pineapples was taken from a large consignment and 65 were
found to be bad. Test whether the proportion of bad ones is not significantly different
from 0.1 at 1% level of significance. (Z = 2.238)
12.A sample poll of 100 voters chosen at random from all the voters in a given district
indicated that 55% of them were in favour of a particular candidate. Find (i) 95% and
(ii) 99% confidence limits for the proportion of all the voters in favour of this candidate.

13.40 people were attacked by a disease and only 36 survived. At 5% LOS, test whether
the survival rate attacked by this disease is more than 85 %. (Z=2.532)
14.The proportions of literates between groups of people of two districts A and B are tested.
Out of the 100 persons selected at random from each district, 50 from district A and 40
from district B are found literates. Test whether the proportion of literate persons in two
districts A and B is same at 1% level of significance? (Z=1.42)
15.In a random sample of 100 men taken from Village A, 60 were found to be consuming
alcohol. In another sample of 200 men taken from Village B, 100 were found to be
consuming alcohol. Do the two villages differ significantly in respect to the proportion
of men who consume alcohol? (Z=1.6366)
16.A factory is producing 50,000 pairs of shoes daily. From a sample of 500 pairs, 2% were
found to be of sub-standard quality. Estimate the number of pairs that can be reasonably
expected to be spoiled at 95% level of confidence. (Ans: 386, 1611)
17.In a year, there are 956 births in a town A of which 52.5% were male, while in towns A

significant difference in the proportion of male births in the two towns? (Z=3.184)
18.A manufacturing firm who produces two types of brands A and B claims that its brand
B outsells its brand A by 8%. If it is found that 42 out of a sample of 200 people prefer
brand A and 18 out of another random sample of 100 people prefer brand B, test whether
the 8% difference is a valid claim. (Z=-1.02)
