MPD 3rd PCT Sector 4 Highlights Below is an update that went out PCT wide earlier today it is a great example on how community and police work together.
Alert neighbors in the southern part of 3rd Precinct helped officers nab four persons on Monday night 3/19 in connection with recent burglaries in the precinct. The resulting case by the precinct's Property Crimes Investigations Unit has led to charges being filed by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office against one suspect, Antwon Dushun Draine. The investigation is continuing. Two of the dispatched officers had just participated in a community Crime and Safety meeting at Pearl Park. The annual event, sponsored by the Hale- Page - Diamond Lake Neighborhood Association, focused on area crime concerns. Among their crime prevention suggestions, the police had stressed the importance of calls to 911 if residents see or hear suspicious activity. Inspector Gerold, commander of the 3rd Precinct, told residents, "We depend on residents to be our eyes and ears in the community. You're here 24 hours a day and can be aware of all that is happening. If burglars see us they will wait until we're out of sight so more patrol isn't effective. You are! Call 911 as soon as you notice something awry." A call at that evening cited a "suspicious vehicle" near East 40th Street and 13th Avenue. The caller said an unfamiliar car had parked on the block and some of its occupants had left and walked eastbound into the neighborhood. He asked that a squad check on it. As officers responded, they observed a number of residents out in their yards who were believed to be among the 911 callers. The officers located two suspects on foot about a block away. Some stolen items were recovered and two people were arrested. Another squad spotted two other persons in the car described by the caller. The officers followed when the vehicle turned into a lot near East 40th Street and Bloomington. The officers investigated and recovered numerous items, among them some from at least two burglaries that had been reported that evening, including one burglary in Diamond Lake Neighborhood. The two males were arrested. Inspector Gerold commended residents' help and the "outstanding" work of the officers in responding, following up, locating other burglaries, finding suspects and recovering numerous losses. She also noted that these arrests generated by citizens' calls were a perfect example of how the community can take a strong role in making neighborhoods safe and secure.
Draine has been charged with 2nd degree felony burglary, felony receiving stolen property, and felony solicitation of a juvenile to be an accomplice. We'll keep you posted as public information becomes available as the investigation and court process continues. You can count on our e-mail asking for your written impact statement as soon as they are needed. The next 3rd Precinct Property Crimes Court Watch is Monday evening, May14, 6:30 pm, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, East Minnehaha Parkway and 18th Avenue South. Watch for further announcements. Meanwhile, please consider participating in your neighborhood's crime and safety committee. Make a difference!
Tips on how to prevent home burglaries: Keep your doors locked at all timeseven when you are home. Check your windows to make sure they are secured. Basement windows may need additional reinforcement. For additional information about window security, go to: www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-prevention/docs/WINSEC.pdf Be extra cautious about your neighborhood. Trust your instincts. Call 911 if you see anything suspicious. Talk to your neighbors about these incidents and ask them to be alert to suspicious activity. We need everyones help. If you dont have a block club or it has been inactive, now is the time to get active. When electronics or larger items are stolen, providing serial numbers of stolen items to the responding officers is important to help in the recovery of your items and in the prosecution of the suspect(s). What you can do now: o Take some time now and document the serial numbers of any valuables that have numbers on it. o Take pictures of your belongings. This would not only help in a criminal case but has helped a few residents filing insurance claims when they had a fire in their home. o Keep this list and photos somewhere safe, like your office or safe deposit box If you are a victim of burglary, report it immediately by calling 911. Inform the responding officers if you see something that may have been handled or left behind by the suspect (cigarette butt, pop can, etc.).
