Assignment
Solve the following problems on A4 sheets and submit them.
1. The incomes of A and B are in the ratio 8 : 7 and their expenditures are in the ratio 19 : 16. If each of them save
` 1250, find their income. (Ans: `6000, `5250)
2. A fraction becomes 9 if 2 is added to both the Nr. and Dr. If 3 is added to both Nr. and Dr. it becomes 5 . Find

the fraction. (Ans: 7/9)
3. Father’s age is three times the sum of the ages of his two children. Five years later, he will be twice the
sum of the ages of his two children. Find the present age of the father. (Ans: 45)
4. The result of dividing a number of two digits by the number with the digits reversed is 4 . If the sum of

the digits is 12, find the number. (Ans: 84)
5. A bag contains 64 coins of ` 2 and ` 5 denominations. If the total value is ` 215, find the number of coins
in each kind. (Ans: 35, 29)
6. Mini scored 150 marks in a test getting 3 marks for each correct answer and losing 2 marks for each
wrong answer. Had 4 marks been awarded for each correct answer and 1 mark been deducted for each
wrong answer, then she would have scored 250 marks. How many questions were there in the test, if
she had attempted all the questions? (Ans: 100)
7. The total expenditure per month of a household consists of a fixed rent of the house and the mess
charges. The total monthly expenditure is `3900 for 2 people and ` 7500 for 5 people. Find the rent and
the mess charge per head per month. (Ans: `1500, `1200)
8. Places A and B are 80 km apart from each other on a highway. A car starts from A and another from B
at the same time. If they travel in the same direction they meet in 8 hours. If they go in opposite
directions, they meet in 1 hour 20 min. Find their speeds. (Ans: 35 km/h, 25 km/h)
9. The area of a rectangle gets reduced by 8 sq. m. if its length is reduced by 5 m and width is increased
by 3 m. If we increase the length by 3 m and breadth by 2 m, the area increases by 74 sq. m. Find the
dimensions of the rectangle. (Ans: l = 19 m, b = 10 m)
10. A railway half ticket costs half the full fare and the reservation charge is the same on a half ticket as on
a full ticket. One reserved full ticket and two reserved half tickets cost ` 1650. Two reserved full ticket
and one reserved half tickets cost `2025. Find the cost of one full ticket (basic fare) and the reservation
charge. (Ans: `750, `50)
11. A man invested a certain amount at 12% SI and another amount at 10% SI and got an annual interest of
` 286. Had he interchanged the amounts invested, he would have received ` 22 less as interest. How
much did he invest at each rate? (Ans: `1800, `700)
12. While covering a distance of 30 km, Ajeet takes 2 hours more than Amit. If Ajeet doubles his speed, he
would take one hour less than Amit. Find the speed of their walking. (Ans: 5 km/h, 7.5 km/h)
13. In ABC, 2A = C and A –B = 40. Find the three angles. (Ans: A = 55, B = 15, C = 110)
14. In a small enclosure, there are parrots and rabbits. They have between them 35 heads and 98 feet.
How many rabbits and parrots are there? (Ans: 14, 21)
15. There are two batches A and B. if 10 students are sent from A to B, the number in both will be the
same. If 20 students are sent from, B to A, then the number of students in A would be double the
number of students in B. Find the number of students in each batch. (Ans: 100, 80)

I. Income and Expenditure Related Problems:
1. The ratio of incomes of two persons is 11 : 7 and the ratio of their expenditures is 9 : 5. If each of them manages to
save ` 400 per month, find their monthly income.(Ans: `2200, `1400)

II. Fraction Related Problems: (Nr. – numerator, Dr. – Denominator)


2. The sum of the Nr. and Dr. of a fraction is 3 less than twice the Dr. If the Nr. and Dr. are decreased by 1, the Nr.
becomes half the Dr. Find the fraction. (Ans: 4/7)
3. The Dr. of a fraction is 4 more than its Nr. If the Nr. is decreased by 2 and the Dr. is increased by 1, the Dr. becomes 8
times the Nr. Find the fraction. (Ans: 3/7)
4. The sum of Nr. and Dr. of a fraction is 4 more than twice the Nr. If Nr. and Dr. are increased by 3, they are in the ratio
2: 3. Find the fraction. (Ans: 5/9)

III. Age Related Problems:


5. Ten years ago, a man was 12 times as old as his son. Ten years later, he will be twice as old as his son. Find their
present ages. (Ans: 34, 12)
6. The present age of a father is 3 years more than thrice the age of the son. Three years hence, the father will be 10
years more than twice the age of the son. Find their present ages. (Ans: 33, 10)
IV. Digits Related Problems:
7. The sum of a 2 digit number and the number obtained by reversing the order of the digits is 121. If the 2 digits differ
by 3, find the number. (Ans: 47 or 74)
8. Seven times a two digit number is equal to four times the number obtained by reversing the order of the digits and
the sum of the digits is 3. Find the number. (Ans: 12)
9. The sum of the digits of a two digit number is 9. The reversed number exceeds the given number by 27. Find the
number. (Ans: 36)
10. Seven times a two digit number is equal to four times the reversed number. If the two digits differ by 3, find the
number. (Ans: 36)
V. Rupees and Coins Related Problems: 15
11. Ajay has collected ` 100 in his piggy bank. His piggy bank has 16 coins of ` 5 and ` 10 denominations. How many coins
of each type does he have? (Ans: 12, 4)
VI. Problems on Correct Answer / Wrong Answer – Deductions:
12. In an exam, one mark is awarded for every correct answer and ¼ deducted for every wrong answer. A student
answered 120 questions and got 90 marks. Find the number of questions answered correctly. (Ans: 96)
VII. Fixed Amount and Increment Problems:
13. A man started his job with a certain monthly salary and got fixed increment every year. If his salary after six years of
service is `29,000 and after 10 years is `35,000, find his starting salary and annual increment. (Ans: `20000, `1500)
VIII. Problems on Moving in Same Direction / Opposite Direction:
14. Places A and B are 90 km apart from each other on a highway. A car starts from A and another from B at the same
time. If they travel in the same direction they meet in 9 hours. If they go in opposite directions, they meet in 9

hours. Find their speeds. (Ans: 40 km/h, 30 km/h)
IX. Problems Based on Area of Rectangle:
15. The length of a room exceeds its breadth by 3 m. If the length is increased by 3 m and the breadth is reduced by 2 m,
the area remains the same. Find the length and breadth of the room. (Ans: l = 15 m, b = 12 m)
X. Problems on Half Ticket and Full Ticket:
16. A railway half ticket costs half the full fare and the reservation charge is the same for a half ticket as that for a full
ticket. One half ticket and two full tickets cost ` 1195. Two half tickets and three full tickets cost ` 1915. What are the
basic full fare and the reservation charge? (Ans: `460, `15)
XI. Problems Based on Commercial Maths:
17. A dealer sold a suitcase and an airbag for ` 1884 by making a profit of 10% on suitcase and 12% on airbag. By selling
them for `1890, he would have made a profit of 12% on suitcase and 10% on airbags. Find the cost price of each.
(Ans: `1000, `700)
18. The population of a town is 50,000. If the males increase by 5% and the females by 3% annually, the population
would grow to 52020 in a year. Find the number of males and females at present. (Ans: 26000, 24000)
XII. Speed, Distance and Time Related Problems:
19. A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train had been 12 km/h faster, it would have taken five
hours less than the scheduled time. If the train had been slower by 8 km/h, it would have taken five hours more
than the scheduled time. Find the length of the journey. (Ans: x = 48, y = 25, distance = 1200 km)
20. A takes 3 hours more than B to walk a distance of 30 km. But if A doubles his pace (speed) he is ahead of B by 1 ½
hours. Find the speeds of A and B. (Ans: 10/3 km/h, 5 km/h)
XIII. Problems Based on Cyclic Quadrilateral:
21. In a cyclic quadrilateral ABCD, A = (2x + 4), B = (y + 3), C = (2y + 10),D = (4x – 5). Find the angles of the
quadrilateral. (Ans:A = 70, B = 53, C = 110, D = 127)
22. In ABC, A = x, B = (3x – 2), C = y. Also C – B = 9. Find the three angles.
(Ans: A = 25, B = 73, C = 82)
XIV. Problems based on head count:
23. A man when asked how many hens and buffaloes he has, told that his animals have 120 eyes and 180 legs. How
many buffaloes and hens did he have? (Ans: 30, 30)
XV. Miscellaneous Problems:
24. Students of a class are made to stand in rows. If 4 students are extra in a row, there would be 2 rows less. If 4
students are less in a row, there would be 4 more rows. Find the number of students in the class. (Ans: x = 12, y = 8,
no. of students = 96)
25. In the figure ABCD is a rectangle. Find the values of x and y.
