WHAT IS ILLUSTRATOR?
▪ Illustrator is a design program that you can use to create and edit artwork for print, web or mobile devices and videos.
▪ The filename extension of Adobe Illustrator is .AI.

Creating a new document from the Menu Bar:

1. On the Menu bar, click File and choose New and the New document dialog box will appear.
2. Type the file name, choose the size and other settings you would like to apply.

THE WORKSPACE
▪ There are many elements in Illustrator that you can use to create your artwork such as panels, bars, and windows.
▪ The arrangement of these elements is called a workspace.
▪ You can create your own workspace by choosing the tools and commands from the Menu bar and drag them to the work area.
▪ You can move the panel to other location within the workspace by clicking the panel title bar and dragging the panel.
▪ To close the panels, click on the Close button on the panel title bar. You can go back to the original setup of the workspace by
click the Window > Workspace > Basic from the Menu Bar.

▪ The Workspace is the entire work area including the panels and toolbars, while the artboard is the area where you design and

Below, the areas of the default workspace as described:

A. Application bar – across the top contains a workspace switcher, a menu bar (Windows only, depending on screen resolution),
and application controls.
B. Control panel – displays options for the currently selected object.
C. Panels – help you monitor and modify your work. Certain panels are displayed by default, but you can add any panel by
choosing it from the Window menu. Many panels have menus with panel-specific options. Panels can be grouped, stacked,
docked, or free-floating.
D. Tools panel – contains tools for creating and editing images, artwork, page elements, and more. Related tools are grouped
together.
E. Document window – displays the file you’re working on.
F. Status bar – appears at the lower-left edge of the Document window. It displays information and navigation controls.

THE MENU BAR

▪ The Menu Bar contains all the functions available in Illustrator.
▪ By clicking a menu in the Menu Bar, a dropdown list of tools and commands will appear.
▪ You can access the tools directly from the Menu bar or you can customize your workspace to make your tools readily available as
you are working on your artboard.

THE TOOLS PANEL

▪ The Tools panel and Panel Docks are the frequently used panels, and
they are automatically displayed when you open the Illustrator
window.
▪ You can move the tools panel by dragging it by its name bar. You can
display the tools in one column by clicking the double arrow on top
of the name bar and shrink return it to two columns by clicking the
same double arrow.
▪ You can also hide and display the tools panel on the Menu bar by
clicking Windows and choosing Tools.
▪ The Tools panel contains selection tools, drawing and painting tools,
editing tools, viewing tools, the Fill and Stroke boxes, Drawing modes,
and screen modes.
▪ The Tools panel shown has two columns. You may see a single-column
Tools panel, depending on your screen resolution and workspace.

▪ Each tool in the tools panel has one or more tools inside which will be described in the later topics.
▪ Place the pointer on the tool to display the name of the tool. By clicking and holding the small triangle beside the tool, various
hidden tools or fly outs will appear.
▪ However, the hidden tools will disappear as you move your mouse away.

TEAR OFF
▪ If you will use the hidden tools, you should tear them off so they will remain displayed in the workspace, and you can access them
easily as you are working.
▪ You can open as many hidden tools as you may need, and you can move and place them anywhere within the workspace.

1. On the Tools panel, select a tool.

2. Hold the mouse and go to the tear off triangle button.
3. Click the tear off button and the tear off toolbar containing the icons will appear.
4. Drag the bar above the icons and move the toolbar anywhere in the artboard.

THE OPTIONS BAR

▪ The Options bar displays options, commands and other panels that are related to the tool that you have selected. It is usually located
below the Menu bar; however, you can place it anywhere in the workspace.
▪ You can hide or show the Options bar by going to the Menu Bar, click Window, check, or uncheck Control. The contents of the
Options bar may vary, depending on the kind of design you are working on.

THE PANEL DOCK

▪ The Panel Dock located at the right side of the window is a collection of panels or panel groups. You can add and remove
panels in the panel dock.
▪ You can see all panels available on the Menu bar.
▪ You can check or uncheck the panels you want to view or hide. You can hide the panel dock and display it again from
the Menu bar by clicking Windows > click Workspace > select Essentials.

▪ When you click an icon in the Panel Dock, it will expand to show the panels inside. If you click the double arrow, it will
shrink back to an icon size.

USING THE SELECTION & DIRECTION SELECTION TOOLS

▪ Your files in Adobe Illustrator are a collection of objects and each object is made up of smaller anchor points.
▪ The most basic tool is the Selection tool.

▪ By using the Selection tool on an object, all the anchor points in the object will be selected so you can work on the whole object. Like
when you click on the object and move your mouse pointer, the whole object moves.

▪ By using the Direct Selection tool, you can work on one specific anchor point at a time. The specific point you click will move but
the other points not selected will remain in place.

▪ The Selection tool is an important function because once you have selected an object that is how you will start to apply the
other tools. Some commands require you to select the object first (using the Selection tool) before you select the command.
▪ To select an object, click on the Selection tool and then click on the object or the edge of a shape. A bounding box with eight
handles will appear. The bounding box and handles can be used for resizing and moving the object. When you press backspace,
clear, or delete, the whole selection will disappear.
▪ You can also make the selection by clicking the Selection tool and clicking the boundary of the object or objects just like drawing a
box. The bounding box will appear. Another way to select two or more objects is to click the objects one by one while holding the
Shift key.

▪ However, if there are changes you need to make, another way of setting the measurement of your artboard is by clicking the File
> selecting Document Setup from the Menu Bar.
▪ You can show the rulers to guide you in measuring your artboard and designs by clicking View > selecting Show Rulers from the
Menu Bar.

USING THE ZOOM AND HAND TOOLS

▪ You can use the Zoom tool to increase or decrease the view of the artwork for you to clearly see and work on the details of your
artwork.

▪ On the Tools panel, click the Zoom icon and click the object you want to magnify. Your mouse pointer will change to a plus (+)
sign. The artwork will be magnified more each time you click the mouse. To decrease the magnification, click the Zoom icon and
hold the Alt key and the mouse pointer changes to a minus (-) sign. The view will be reduced each time you click the mouse.

▪ You can move around the window and the artwork using the Hand tool. Click on the Hand tool and grab the artwork up, down, or
sideways. You can also use the scroll bars to move around the window.
