Domain and Range Properties

The document outlines properties for determining the domain and range of various types of functions, including polynomials, rational functions, square roots, logarithmic functions, and exponential functions. It provides specific conditions for each function type, such as excluding values that make the denominator zero or ensuring the radicand is non-negative. General tips for finding domain and range emphasize focusing on input restrictions and possible outputs of the functions.

Properties for Finding Domain and Range

Domain

Properties for Finding the Domain:

1. Polynomials (e.g., f(x) = x^2 + 3x + 2)

- Domain: All real numbers (-infinity, infinity)

2. Rational Functions (e.g., f(x) = 1 / (x - 2))

- Exclude values that make the denominator zero.

- Domain: All real numbers except where the denominator is zero.

3. Square Roots (Even Roots) (e.g., f(x) = sqrt(x - 1))

- Radicand must be >= 0

- Solve: x - 1 >= 0 => x >= 1

4. Even Root in Denominator (e.g., f(x) = 1 / sqrt(x - 2))

- Radicand must be > 0

- Solve: x - 2 > 0 => x > 2

5. Logarithmic Functions (e.g., f(x) = log(x - 3))

- Argument must be > 0

- Solve: x - 3 > 0 => x > 3

Range

Properties for Finding the Range:

1. Parabola f(x) = x^2

- Range: [0, infinity)

Properties for Finding Domain and Range

2. Square Root Function f(x) = sqrt(x)

- Range: [0, infinity)

3. Rational Function f(x) = 1 / x

- Range: (-infinity, 0) U (0, infinity)

4. Logarithmic Function f(x) = log(x)

- Range: (-infinity, infinity)

5. Exponential Function f(x) = a^x, a > 0

- Range: (0, infinity)

6. Absolute Value f(x) = |x|

- Range: [0, infinity)

General Tips

General Tips:

- Domain: Focus on input restrictions (division by 0, square root of negative, log of negative).

- Range: Think about the possible outputs the function can produce.
