One of the main purposes of guidance and counseling is to help students identify their
strengths, interests, and limitations. It also plays a role in resolving personal, academic,
and social problems. Students are encouraged to make responsible choices and become
emotionally and psychologically strong individuals.
Guidance and counseling serves five major functions. The preventive function aims to
avoid potential issues such as bullying or academic failure. The developmental function
helps students enhance their potential and life skills. The curative function addresses
existing problems and provides appropriate solutions. The preservative function
maintains students’ mental well-being. The advocative function defends and promotes
the rights and welfare of students.
These services are divided into four main areas. Personal guidance supports students in
managing emotions, stress, and self-awareness. Social guidance improves
communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. Academic guidance helps students
develop better study habits and overcome learning difficulties. Career guidance
provides assistance in planning for future jobs or further education.
Various techniques are used to deliver guidance and counseling, including individual and
group counseling, classroom activities, home visits, media-based methods, and online
platforms. Some innovative approaches like art therapy and bibliotherapy are also applied
to make the sessions more engaging.
A counselor plays many roles such as motivator, listener, and facilitator. They must
maintain confidentiality and show empathy. Counselors also collaborate with teachers
and parents to provide the best support for students. To remain effective, they are
required to continue learning about psychology, ethics, and counseling methods.
