(II) EARTHING RESISTANCE CALCULATION

Refer below values of soil resistivity and depth of water from ground surface

Maximum Soil Resistivity (ρa(max)) : 2384.47 ohm-meters *

Minimum Soil Resistivity (ρa(min)) : 695.93 ohm-meters *
Average soil resistivity (ρa(Av)) : 1383.53 (Average calculated based on total no of results)
Depth of water from Ground surface : 4.00 meters *
* These values are considered based on BIFP data and to be updated based on Geo technical results

Note.1: As the above value of electrical resistivity of soil in BAB is very high, Deep well earth pits penetrating the water table
needs to be considered.

Resistance to earth of a deep well touching water table would generally be very low, as per Figure-17 (Effects of moisture,
temperature and salt upon soil resistivity) of IEEE 80. Further as per BS 7430:2011, value of underground water resistivity
would be typically around 1 - 5 Ω•m as per Table 1 of the standard.

Hence, for earthing calculation purpose a conservative electrical resistivity value of 5 Ω•m is considered. not conservative value , but total value of Grid resistance and Soil resistivity
Ground water level depth is considered in line with BIFP. should come maximum upto 5 ohm
(As per specification for Electrical Bulk Materials - Doc. No. 11-99-53-1607, electrodes shall be extended below 2 meters under
summer water table.) soil resistivity is high , that is why earth grid is required to dissipate earth fault
Hence, considering the worst case, deep well earth pit of 6 meters length pipe electrode is considered. current

respect to earth) in the presence of a finite thickness of surface layer material. This derating factor can be
approximated by an empirical formula as per IEEE Std 80-2013 Eq. 27:

E. Maximum Ground Potential Rise (GPR)
The maximum electrical potential that a substation grounding grid may attain relative to a distant grounding point
assumed to be at the potential of remote earth. This voltage, GPR, is equal to the maximum grid current times the grid
resistance.
GPR : Ig x Rg Volts Refer IEEE Std. 80-2013.Eq. B.12

Maximum value of Ground fault current for LV system shall be considered for ground potential rise
Ig:
calculation DC offset decrement factor to be considered based on X/R of the system
Maximum value of Ground fault current for 3.3kV system shall be considered for ground potential rise (GPR) calculation.
Note: Restricted earth fault current value for resistance grounded 3.3kV is 400A as per Key single line diagram Doc. No. 11-20-
59-1605

Rg: Calculated Ground resistance of the earth network

LV switchgear fault level is not considered for GPR calculation. For distribution substations with the transformer grounded
only on the distribution side fault current circulates in the substation grid conductor with negligible leakage current into the
earth and, thus, has no effect on the substation GPR as shown in Figure 27 of IEEE-80.

Ig : 400 A Refer IEEE Std. 80-2013.Eq. B.12 Ground fault current is restricted to 400 Amps with NGR ?? Then above calculation complete phase fault current (25000Amps ) considered for calculation
Rg : 32.248 Ohm-meter Total GPR= Ground Fault Current X Decrement Factor from DC offset value
GPR : 12899.08 Volts X Current Division Factor ( Generally considered as 1 ) X Resistance of Earth grid

Since GPR value is less than the allowable step and touch potential there is no requirement of ground grid for controlling
the step and touch potential.
However insulating mat to be provided in the front and back of the 3.3kV & 415V switchgear for the safety of the persons
working in the system.

Minimum Soil Resistivity (ρa(min)) : 746.82 ohm-meters *
Average soil resistivity (ρa(Av)) : 22524.76 (Average calculated based on total no of results)
Depth of water from Ground surface : 7.52 meters *
* These values are considered based on BIFP data and to be updated based on Geo technical results

Note.1: As the above value of electrical resistivity of soil in BAB is very high, Deep well earth pits penetrating the water
table needs to be considered.

Resistance to earth of a deep well touching water table would generally be very low, as per Figure- 17 (Effects of moisture,
temperature and salt upon soil resistivity) of IEEE 80. Further as per BS 7430:2011, value of underground water resistivity
would be typically around 1 - 5 Ω•m as per Table 1 of the standard.

Hence, for earthing calculation purpose a conservative electrical resistivity value of 5 Ω•m is considered.
Ground water level depth is considered in line with BIFP.
(As per specification for Electrical Bulk Materials - Doc. No. 11-99-53-1607, electrodes shall be extended below 2 meters

E. Maximum Ground Potential Rise (GPR) 1
GPR : Ig x Rg Volts Refer IEEE Std. 80-2013.Eq. B.12

Ig: Maximum value of Ground fault current for LV system shall be considered for ground potential rise calculation

However, for distribution substations with the transformer grounded only on the distribution side, fault current circulates in the substation
grid conductor with negligible leakage current into the earth and, thus has no effect on the substation GPR as shown in Figure 27 of IEEE-
80.

Further, the deep well earth pits considered makes the earthing network resistance very negligible and hence the GPR value would be
negligible.

Hence, there is no requirement of ground grid for controlling the step and touch potential. However insulating mat to be provided in the front
and back of the LV switchgear for the safety of the persons working in the system.

b) Resistance of supplementary earth Electrodes

The resistance of the supplementary earth electrode were found by substituting the following values in the
equation 1 and equation 2 as shown below,
Diameter of the Electrode(d') : 0.025 m
Number of Auxillary electrodes(n') : 8 Nos.
Distance between adjacent rods in meters(s) : 6 m
Length of Auxillary electrode(L') : 3.6 m
λ Factor : 5.46 (As per Table 2 & 3 of BS 7430)
: (1383.53/ (2*pi*3.6))*(ln((8*3.6)/0.025)-1)
Resistance of the Earth Electrode (R) : 370.19 Ohms

: (1383.53/ (2*pi*370.2*6))
