ELECTROPLATED ZINC-NICKEL ALLOY COATING (HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM FREE)

1. Scope
This standard covers the electroplated zinc-nickel coating (hereinafter
referred to as "plating") provided on steel surface of automotive parts for the
purpose of corrosion prevention. The parts made of materials provided by this
standard shall conform to prohibitions and restrictions for substances of
environmental concern in TSZ0001G. Exempt uses specified by EU ELV Directive
shall conform to the latest version of the Directive.

2. Process Outline
After performing pre-treatment (i.e. removal of black skin, degreasing, acid
cleaning, etc.) appropriate for the type of base metal and surface condition,
implement the plating by means of electrolytic separation of metal elements in
an electrolytic solution containing metallic salts of zinc and nickel. Then,
provide chromate treatment as a post-treatment by means of chromate bath that
does not contain hexavalent chromium (hereinafter referred to as "chromate
treatment"). Dehydrogenation treatment shall be provided prior to chromate
treatment as necessary.

3. Classification
Plating is classified as given in Table 1 in accordance with plating thickness
(grades) and post-treatment.

Table 1 Classification of Plating

Grade Code Use conditions
Colored chromate ( 1 ) Black chromate ( 1 )
after plating after plating
A TSH6530G-AC TSH6530G-AE Harsh
B TSH6530G-BC TSH6530G-BE Ordinary

Note:(1)
If any problems are not found in design and functionality (tightening
performance, conductivity), sealer or top coat may be treated after chromate
treatment based on the agreement by the parties concerned.

4. Quality
4.1 Appearance
Appearance of plating shall be checked in accordance with Section 5.1. There
shall be no abnormalities such as uneven luster, uneven color, dulling, stains,
blistering, scars, pit, peeling, cracks, and exposure of base metal. General
color tone of the plating is shown in Table 2 as reference. When the color tone
of the plating and gloss need to be specified, they shall be determined by the
agreement among the parties concerned.

Classification Color tone
Colored chromate after plating Gray or interference color
Black chromate after plating Black

4.2 Plating Thickness and Corrosion Resistance

Plating thickness and corrosion resistance shall be tested in accordance with
Sections 5.2 and 5.3. The results shall meet the specifications in Table 3.
However, the specifications are not applicable for the screw portions, dents
and joint portions which do not contact with the spherical surface of 12 mm
diameter, and portions which are determined by the agreement among the parties
concerned.

Table 3 Plating Thickness and Corrosion Resistance

Grade Plating thickness Corrosion resistance

corrosion product is rust (brown rust) is
generated (h) ( 3 ) generated (h) ( 4 )
A 0.010 min. 300 min. 1000 min.
B 0.005 min. 650 min.

Note:(2)
Plating thickness refers to the thickness excluding colored chromate coating.
Note:(3)
White powder corrosion, which can be easily recognized by eyes, shall not
be generated in the applicable area and within the specified time.
Discoloration of chromate coating shall not be regarded as corrosion product.
Note:(4)
Three or more iron rusts (brown rust) shall not be generated in 100 cm2 of
applicable area within the specified time. However, not even one rust with
2 mm or larger diameter is allowed.

4.3 Alloy Ratio of Plating

The alloy ratio of plating shall meet the specifications in Table 4 after the
test is conducted in accordance with Section 5.4.

Table 4 Alloy Ratio

Composition Ratio (mass%)
Zinc 85 to 95
Nickel 5 to 15

5. Test Methods
5.1 Appearance Test
Visual check shall be made under room light across the distance of 500 mm.

5.2 Thickness Test

Plating thickness shall be measured in microscopic observation of vertically
cut section of the plating, as a standard method.

5.3 Corrosion Resistance Test

In compliance with JIS Z 2371 or ASTM B117, a continuous salt spray test shall
be conducted on samples processed at least 24 h before.

5.4 Plating Alloy Ratio Test

Atomic absorption spectroscopy shall basically be employed and an effective
plating area of about 50 cm2 shall be used for measurement. If the specimen
affords an effective area smaller than this, then the total area of the specimen
shall be tested. Sampling locations on the effective plated surface shall be
determined upon consultation between the parties concerned.

Applicable Standards
TSZ0001G Control Method for Substances of Environmental Concern
JIS Z 2371 Methods of Salt Spray Testing
ASTM B117 Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus
