Beam Moment Distribution Solution

The document outlines the analysis of a compound steel I beam using the Moment Distribution Method, detailing the loading conditions, beam spans, and calculations for fixed-end moments, stiffness, and distribution factors. It includes step-by-step calculations for reactions, shear force, and bending moment diagrams, ultimately summarizing the shear force and bending moment at key points along the beam. The analysis is based on a beam made of S355 steel with specified dimensions and loads.

Moment Distribution Method - Beam Analysis

Problem Description:
A compound steel I beam AE consisting of two portions, AC and CE, hinged together at C, is
supported and loaded as follows:
- Point load of 5 kN at free end A
- Uniform distributed load (UDL) of 10 kN/m over DE (4 m)
- Supports: B and D are rollers, E is pin, A is free end
- Span lengths: AB = 2 m, BC = 2 m, CD = 2 m, DE = 4 m
- Beam properties: S355 steel with Young's modulus E = 210 GPa

Step-by-Step Solution:

Step 1: Define Beam Spans and Fixed-End Moments

The beam consists of two spans because of the hinge at C:
- Span AC (A to C), length = 4 m
- Span CE (C to E), length = 6 m
Fixed-end moments are calculated for both spans assuming both ends fixed.

Step 2: Calculate Fixed-End Moments (FEM)

Span AC:
- Point load 5 kN at A
- Using fixed-end moment formulas for point load at end:
M_AB = -2PL/3 = -13.33 kNm
M_BA = PL/3 = 6.67 kNm

Span CE:
- Uniform load 10 kN/m over DE (4 m)
- Equivalent point load W = 40 kN at 4 m from C
- Fixed-end moments due to point load at 4 m from left:
M_CE = -17.78 kNm
M_EC = 35.56 kNm

Step 3: Calculate Moment of Inertia (I)

Using section dimensions:
- H = 320 mm, B = 105 mm, t_f = 10 mm, t_w = 6 mm
- Calculated I = 6.41 × 10⁻⁵ m⁴
Step 4: Calculate Stiffness (K)
EI = E × I = 210 × 10⁹ × 6.41 × 10⁻⁵ = 13.46 × 10⁶ Nm²
K = 4EI / L
- For span AC (L=4m): K = 13.46 × 10⁶ Nm/rad
- For span CE (L=6m): K = 8.97 × 10⁶ Nm/rad

Step 5: Calculate Distribution Factors (DF)

At rollers and pins, moments are zero, so distribution factors are 1 for single connected
members:
- Joint B: DF = 1
- Joint D: DF = 1

Step 6: Moment Distribution

Moments at roller supports are zero, so moments at B and D are balanced by fixed end
moments and carry-over moments.
Adjusted moments at A and B calculated accordingly.

Step 7: Calculate Reactions

Sum of vertical forces:
R_B + R_D + R_E = 45 kN
Moment about A:
2 R_B + 6 R_D + 10 R_E = 320
Moment about C (left span):
2 R_B = 20 → R_B = 10 kN
Moment about E (right span):
4 R_D = 80 → R_D = 20 kN
Calculate R_E:
R_E = 15 kN

Step 8: Shear Force Diagram (SFD)

- At A: V = -5 kN
- At B: V jumps to +5 kN
- Constant 5 kN to C
- At C: shear jumps from +5 kN to -5 kN (hinge)
- At D: shear jumps to +15 kN
- Shear decreases linearly to 0 at E

Step 9: Bending Moment Diagram (BMD)

- Moments at supports A, B, C, D, and E are zero.
- Maximum moments occur between supports.
- Moment values can be computed by integrating shear diagram.

Summary:
| Point | Shear Force (kN) | Bending Moment (kNm) |
|-------|------------------|---------------------|
| A | -5 |0 |
| B | +5 |0 |
| C | 5 (left), -5 (right) | 0 |
| D | +15 |0 |
|E |0 |0 |
