Title: The influence of globalization on local culture in my community

Stage 1: Problem Identification

Problem Description
Globalization has significantly impacted local cultures worldwide, leading to
both cultural enrichment and cultural erosion. While globalization promotes
cultural exchange, technological advancement, and economic growth, it also
raises concerns about cultural homogenization, loss of traditions, and
dominance of global influences over local customs.

Statement of intent

I intend to explore how globalization affects local cultures, analysing both

positive and negative impacts and proposing strategies to preserve cultural
identity while embracing global progress.

Design specification

-should be able to identify the causes of globalisation.

-should be able to resolve the effects of globalization.
-should be able to raise campaign and awarenesses of globalization.
Stage 2: Identifying of Related Ideas

Positive Impacts on Local Culture

1. Community Exchange & Hybridization:
- Local festivals can serve as melting pots where traditional crafts and
culinary techniques meet innovative ideas from global influences.
- Examples include workshops where elders and youth collaborate in cooking
traditional meals with modern recipes or reinterpret classic music styles with
current digital sounds.

2. Empowerment through Technology:

- Community centres using digital archives to record oral histories, local
dialects, and traditional art help preserve cultural narratives.
- Local entrepreneurs may use social media and online platforms to promote
indigenous products and artisan crafts. But the community might witness a shift
in values where rapid modernization sidelines the deep, locally rooted practices
such as storytelling, communal celebrations, and ritual

3. Boost to Local Economy:

- Small businesses benefit when cross-cultural exposure introduces local
products to wider markets, while community-based tourism can highlight
authentic cultural experiences. But unique community enterprises, such as
local craft workshops or seasonal fairs, often struggle to compete against mass-
produced imports from multinational corporations.

4. Enhanced Social Cohesion:

- Community dialogue fostered by global exposure often leads to a deeper
understanding of local identity and heritage, as residents work together to
protect their traditions. But with global languages dominating education and
media, few young community members may grow up speaking the traditional
tongue fluently.

3. Westernization of Traditions:
- With global languages dominating education and media, few young
community members may grow up speaking the traditional tongue fluently
Local practices can be superficially “modernized” to appeal to global tastes
while losing the nuanced meaning behind them.
Data Collection Methods
- Surveys: Develop questionnaires that target local households, community
centres, and schools to assess perceptions about cultural changes due to
globalization.

- Interviews: Conduct in-depth conversations with local cultural leaders, elders,

artisans, and educators to understand firsthand the shifts in traditions.

- Community Case Studies: Select neighbourhoods or districts where

globalization’s influence is palpable and document the evolution of daily life,
festivals, and language use.

- Review of Local Government Reports: Analyse policy documents and cultural

preservation initiatives specific to the community.
Stage 3: Analysis and Proposed Solutions

based on my solutions I had to research the following:

Cultural Homogenization: Local events losing uniqueness due to standardized

global practices. Organize community festivals featuring traditional arts, local
culinary classes, and storytelling sessions led by elders. Limited funding:
engaging youth who lean towards modern trends.

Loss of Indigenous Languages: Young residents prefer English or global

languages over local dialects. Launch community language initiatives, such as
bilingual education programs and digital archives for local stories. Scarcity of
qualified teachers; difficulty in motivating youth.

Westernization of Traditions: Local customs altered to mimic Western

lifestyles. Support initiatives that blend tradition with modern art forms while
retaining authentic cultural messages. Balancing contemporary relevance with
cultural purity.

Decline of Local Businesses: Local artisans and markets losing ground to

imported products. Create local co-operatives; use online platforms to market
indigenous products; hold fairs that celebrate local craftsmanship. | Competition
with well-established multinational brands; limited marketing budgets.
Stage 4:

Methods to Share Results

1. Graphs and Charts: Display trends in cultural shifts due to globalization.

2. Reports: Summarize findings on globalization’s effects on local traditions.

3. Infographics: Highlight solutions for preserving cultural identity.

4. Community Forums: Engage local leaders and residents in discussions on

cultural sustainability.

Stage 5: Presentation of Ideas

Steps for Cultural Preservation and Global Adaptation

1. Encourage cultural tourism to promote heritage appreciation.

2. Develop digital archives for endangered languages and traditions.

3. Support local businesses through fair trade and ethical consumerism.

4. Monitor globalization trends and adjust policies accordingly.

Stage 6: Evaluation and recommendations

Evaluation of Success
- Measure improvements in cultural awareness and preservation efforts
- Analyse the impact of new policies on local traditions.
- Gather feedback on community engagement in cultural sustainability.

Challenges were:
- Balancing modernization with cultural preservation, ensuring equal
representation of local traditions, and overcoming economic pressures from
globalization.

- Cultural sustainability required education, policy support, and active

community participation to maintain our heritage.

Recommendations
1. Impact of Social Media on Cultural Identity: Study how digital platforms
influence traditions.
