Document

The document discusses the various applications of robotics, categorizing tasks into five types: dirty, dull, dangerous, dexterous, and domestic work. It explains the components of robots, such as CPUs, sensors, controllers, actuators, power supplies, and manipulators, and distinguishes between independent and dependent robots. The primary goals of robotics include automating tasks, improving efficiency, and reducing costs.

Question 1

1.1 Robotics is a rapidly growing field that has transformed the way we live and work.
1.2 -Dirty work
- Dangerous work
- Dexterous work
- Domestic work
1.3 Dirty work – Robots do dirty or unsanitary work, or jobs that are hazardous to people’s
health.
Dull work – Robots perform tasks that involve doing the same thing over and over again.
Dangerous work – Robots perform tasks that are too dangerous for humans to do.
Dexterous work – Robots that very precise, detailed or fine work that is difficult for
humans to do.
Domestic work – Robots that clean homes serve or help people, or do tasks in the home
that frail or elderly people cannot do.
1.4 CPU – it processes the signals sent to it from the sensors, which allow it to read the
environment. Then it decide what action to take, according to it’s programming.
Sensors – These are the most important part of the Robot because they help the robot
to determine:
- It’s position
- How close it is to other elements in it’s environment
- Temperature
Controller – This helps the robot carry out the task it was given by controlling the
components that will physically perform the task.
Actuator – The actuator it’s what gives the robot it’s movement. The source of
energy that makes the movements can be electricity, air pressure or liquid
pressure.
Power supply – This component gives energy to the robot so that it can move. In a
pneumatic system, the is air pressure. In a hydraulic system, the source is liquid
pressure.
Manipulator – This component manipulates the joints and links of the robot the
manipulator is connected between the base support and the end – effector.
1.5 Independent Robots – Independent robots are robots that operate autonomously,
making decisions based on their programming and sensors.
Dependent Robots – Dependent Robots are robots that rely on human input, guidance
or control to operate effectively.
They may have some autonomy, but ultimately, their actions are determined by human
decisions.
1.6 -to automate tasks
-improve efficiency
-and reduce costs.
1.7
1.7.1 5D’s refer to what robots do from dirty, dull, dangerous, dexterous, to domestic
work classified to what each robot is good for.
1.7.2 – Robots that spray – paint cars bodies
- Robots that feed live stock on farms.

- Robots that disarm, detonate or re move bombs.

- Robots that paint or draw realistic pictures.

- Robots that act as companions for elderly people.
