When reviewing corrections, always check the print number of your

book. Corrections are made to printed books with each subsequent
printing.

Note: Due to some oddities in the printing production process, multiple

print runs may have the same printing number. To fully identify some
printings, you must look at the copyright page, and find both the
printing number and the printing month/year. In this errata file, when
the same print run number has been used for multiple printings, the
printing number and date is listed in this errata file. Please compare
this to your book’s copyright page to find the correct printing and
section to begin with in this errata file.

4th Printing

Page 256 – Figure 9-4 – Router labeled “S1” should be “R1” to match
the notes in the upper left of the figure.

Page 267 – 2nd bullet – parenthetical “(S2, RID 7.7.7.7)” should list S1
instead of S2.

Page 270 – paragraph between the two tables – the meaning is

incorrect. Replace paragraph with: “To configure stubby areas, all
routers attached to the area can be configured with the exact same

CCIE Routing and Switching Official Exam Certification Guide – Third Edition
Errata - 6/22/2025
command for each stubby area type, as listed in Table 8-6. However, in
areas that are totally stubby, non-ABRs can omit the no-summary
keyword.”

Page 275 – last paragraph before figure 9-11 – 2nd to last line – text
reads “This behavior prevents ABR2 from choosing a path through
ABR2…” – the 2nd occurrence of ABR2 should be ABR1.

Page 277 – Bottom of example 9-8 – the comment lines for R3’s
configuration – Replace with: “! Note that R3’s area 2 nssa no-
summary command matches R1’s area command. However, R3 could
omit the no-summary keyword, because R3 is not an ABR.”

Page 278 – Example 9-9 – comments at the bottom of page 278 –

R33’s RID has changed to 192.168.1.1 since the events surrounding
figure 9-6 earlier in the chapter. The discussion around Figure 9-6
correctly describe R33’s RID as 10.3.3.33, while in Example 9-9, note
that R33’s RID is 192.168.1.1.

Page 475 – last paragraph – 3rd to last line – text “… or 64 kbps * .125
ms = …” – it should read “.125 s” for .125 seconds.

Page 475 – Figure 14-2 – center top rectangular thought bubble – text
“…Send 16,000 bits in each interval…” – should state “8000”.

Page 475 – paragraph after Figure 14-2 – last line – states “…192.5 ms of consecutive
sending…” should state “187.5”.

3rd Printing

Page 67 – paragraph following the 1, 2, 3 numbered list – both

references to "TCA" should instead be "TC".

Page 166-167 – Inverse ARP – Testing on IOS 12.4T releases shows that
IOS now behaves slightly differently than described on pages 166-167
of the book. With Inverse ARP disabled on one router, both do learn the
mappings. The one router with InARP enabled send the InARP
message, and the other router, with InARP disabled, sends a reply.

Page 201 – table 7-6 – command listed as "key string"– should be

"key-string string"

Page 207 – question 8 – answer C – shorten the answer, ending the

answer after "10.1.2.0/24".

CCIE Routing and Switching Official Exam Certification Guide – Third Edition
Errata - 6/22/2025
Page 225 – Table 8-5 – 2nd-top-last row, first column – command should
instead be "traffic-share min across-interfaces".

Page 260 – 2nd paragraph under heading "LSA Types 1 and 2" –
sentence that begins at the end of the first line with text "The LSID is
the…" – replace that sentence with "The LSID is the DR's interface IP
address on that subnet." (The LSID is not the DR's RID.)

Page 261 – figure 9-7 – text above bottom left circle – text current
reads "to RID 10.3.3.33 Interface 10.3.3.33", should instead list "…
Interface 10.3.1.33".

Page 276 – 2nd paragraph – 5th line, middle – sentence that begins "R1
calculates its cost to reach ABR2…" – should instead begin "R2…".

Page 281 – list of 4 items – 4th item – command "ospf auto-cost

reference-bandwidth" should instead be "auto-cost reference-
bandwidth"

Page 282 – example 9-10 – the filtering feature works as shown.

However, the feature of placing the alternate route in the routing table,
as shown in the example with the route for 10.4.8.0/24 (through S0.1),
appears to only occur in older IOS releases.

Page 318 – example 10-3 – 3rd line above the 2nd thick black line –
current begins "! R3 begins with an AD 120 OSPF route,…" – should say
"…AD 110…"

Page 358 – example 11-5 – 11th line, which reads "ip route 34.0.0.0
255.0.0.0" – change the mask to "255.255.255.0".

Pages 362-368 – The BGP loop prevention logic as worded in this

section says that routers do not SEND BGP prefixes if the next ASN is in
the AS_PATH. In reality, the prefixes are sent, with the RECEIVING
router comparing its own ASN with the AS_PATH PA, and rejecting
those prefixes with duplicate ASNs in order to avoid loops. To fix this
error, make these specific changes:

 Page 362 - 2nd paragraph after bulleted list – last two lines –
reads "…are used to prevent a route from being re-advertised to
an AS that has already heard about the route" – replace this
phrase with "…are used so that when a router receives an
update, it can ignore prefixes for which its own ASN is listed."
 Page 365 – Example 11-7 – first 2 lines – replace those lines with
"! R6 does receive the 23.0.0.0 prefix from R1, then checks the

CCIE Routing and Switching Official Exam Certification Guide – Third Edition
Errata - 6/22/2025
AS_SET PA, notices its own ASN (678), and ignores the prefix in
order to avoid a loop."
 Page 369 – Table 11-8 – remove the last row.
 Page 376 – 3rd bullet point – delete.

Page 378 – paragraph after 2-bullet list – 3rd line – "(AD 200)" should be
"(AD 20)".

Page 495 – Example 14-9 – Police command inside class-default – the

"exceed-action transmit" should instead be "exceed-action set-
dscp-transmit 0"

Page 563 – table 16-5 – row listing "Is Report Suppression Mechanism
Available" in the first column – the 2nd column, for IGMPv1, should list
"No" instead of "Yes".

Page 595 – last paragraph – reference to 10.1.1.1 should instead be

10.1.1.10.

Page 644 – bold commands in question 1 – 5th line – reads "aaa

authentication enable default group radius local" – replace ending
"local" with "enable". Also, the lines beginning "radius-server host
10.1.1.3…" and "radius-server host 10.1.1.4…", and the next line as
well, are extraneous, and should be deleted.

Page 685 – figure 18-11 – upper left – text reading "Dynamic and
Permanent Spoke-to-Spoke IPsec Tunnels" – replace "Spoke-to-Spoke"
with "Hub-to-Spoke".

Page 747 – list of 3 IPv6 addresses just below the middle of the page –
2nd line – 2nd to last quartet of "0174AB" should be "01AB".

Page 832 – The chapter 18 DIKTA quiz has 9 questions, but the
answers appendix has 10 answers. The DIKTA quiz omitted what
should have been question 7. So, to fix the problem, ignore the answer
to question 7 on page 832. Then treat the answers labeled as for
questions 8, 9, and 10 as being the answers for questions 7, 8, and 9,
respectively, on page 646.

2nd Printing

CCIE Routing and Switching Official Exam Certification Guide – Third Edition
Errata - 6/22/2025
Page 42 – Table 2-4 – lower right cell – replace text with "Specifies the
interface whose IP address is used to identify this switch in VTP
updates."

Page 64 – last paragraph– 1st line – phrase "… one switch forwarding
onto…" should be "… one switch forwarding Hellos onto…" Also, the
last sentence in the paragraph, which begins "By definition…", and is
on the top of page 65, should be deleted.

Page 66 – paragraph after the 4-item list – end of the last sentence
currently reads "… and SW3's Fa 0/4 as RP." – this should instead read
"…and SW2's Fa0/4 as RP."

Page 709 – paragraph under example 19-2 – the bold command “show
mpls bindings 10.3.3.0/24” should instead be “show mpls ldp
bindings 10.3.3.0/24”.

1st Printing

Page 69 – 2nd paragraph – 3rd line – “…only over the native VLAN…”
should instead read “…only over VLAN 1…”. The CST STP instance runs
over VLAN 1, regardless of the setting of the native VLAN on the
trunks.

Page 111 – figure 4-4 – There are three errors. 1) The text area near
the bottom that has a downward-facing arrow below it – the text
“172.31.24.0/21” should instead list a mask of “/22”. (2) on the center
right, the text “172.31.16.0/21: 24.0 thru 31.255” should list
“172.31.24.0” instead of “172.31.16.0”. (3) on the center left, near the
bottom, the text "172.31.16.0/22: 20.0 Thru 23.255" should instead
begin with "172.31.20.0/22…"

Page 238, 818 - question 4 - the correct answer is "B, D". Replace the
explanation text with:
"The correct answers are "B, D". In this case, R2 has a
Hello interval of 9, and the other three routers have a Hello
interval of 10 - either by default or through explicit configuration.
As a result, R1/R3/R4 will ignore R2, and vice-versa, for DR
election. R2 will consider itself to have no competitors, so R2 will
make itself be a DR.
Between the 3 routers (R1, R3, and R4) whose parameters
match enough to compete to become DR, R3 becomes DR due to
tying on priority, but having the lowest RID. All three routers
have a Hello interval of 10, and a default dead interval of 40 (4
times the Hello), making answer D correct."

Errata - 6/22/2025
Page 449 – Figure 13-4 has a math error. The equation on the left
should result in 96 kbps remaining, instead of 92 kbps. The bottom two
smaller rectangles, inside the larger tall rectangle, should use 96 kbps
as the basis, with text “96 kbps * .75 = 72 kbps” (second to last
rectangle) and “Unallocated: 96 kbps – 72 kbps = 24 kbps”.

Page 703 – last paragraph before the grayed note at the bottom of the
page – last line – The bolded command “no mpls ttl-propagation…”
should instead be “no mpls ip ttl-propagation [local | forwarded]”

Page 706 – Figure 19-8 – PE1’s upper interface should be “S0/0/1”, not
“S0/1/1”.

Page 706 – item number 5 – the reference to “(20)” should instead be

“(22)”.

Page 707 – indented paragraph – very last word “LIB” should instead
be “LFIB”.

Page 708 – Figure 19-9 – three interfaces are listed with the incorrect
interface numbers. (1) PE1’s upper interface should be “S0/0/1”, not
“S0/1/1”. (2) P1’s left interface should be “S0/0/1”, not “S0/1/1”. (3)
P2’s left interface should be “S0/0/1”, not “S0/1/1”.

Page 709 – paragraph under example 19-2 – the bold command “show
ip mpls bindings 10.3.3.0/24” should instead be “show mpls ldp
bindings 10.3.3.0/24”. Note that the “show mpls ip bindings
10.3.3.0/24” command could also have been used to find the same
information.)
Page 711 – Paragraph after the grayed “NOTE” – the one reference to
“S0/1/0” should instead be “S0/0/1”.

Page 711 – paragraph before Example 19-3 – 3rd line – reference to

“S0/1/0” should instead be “S0/0/1”.

Page 718 – figure 19-13 – in the packet labeled with a circled “3”, the
outer label should be “2222”, not “1111”.

Page 720 – item number 2 at the bottom of the page – 1 st line –

reference to “PE3” should instead be “PE2”.

Page 729 - paragraph directly under sentence number 4 – 1 st line –

Reference to “PE3” should instead be “PE2”.

Page 732 - paragraph under figure 19-21 - 2nd line – reference to label
“2222” should instead be “1111”

Page 733 – figures 19-22 and 19-23 – same errors – on the right, for
router PE2, the interface label should not be “S0/0/1”, but instead be
“S0/1/0”. In the thought bubble above PE2, the reference to “S0/1/1”
should instead be “S0/1/0”.
