MOOC AWARENESS SESSION ON

SKILL ENHANCEMENT COURSE
Introduction
An awareness session on Skill Enhancement Course was conducted by VTU for 4th semester
students on 26th May 2025 at 9:30AM in AIET Auditorium. The program commenced with a
compelling example that highlighted the growing importance of skill enhancement courses in
securing employment in today’s competitive job market. The example served as a foundation
to underscore the need for structured programs that equip students with relevant, industry-
ready skills beyond academic knowledge.

Mandatory Internship Program by VTU

Participants were informed that the current Vice-Chancellor of VTU has introduced a
mandatory internship program across affiliated institutions. This initiative aims to expose
students to real-world work environments and bridge the academic-industry divide.

Placement Status and Internship Challenges

An open discussion was held regarding the current placement status of the college and
challenges faced in securing internships. These included a lack of industry connections,
inadequate preparation, and limited awareness about available opportunities.

Role of SEC (Skill Enhancement Courses)

The Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) were presented as a solution to bridge the gap
between student interests and required industry skills. SECs are designed to complement
academic learning and build practical competencies necessary for internships and placements.

Structure of SEC under VTU

A detailed briefing was provided on the structure of SECs as defined by VTU: 9 bundles of
courses are available. Each bundle consists of 5 courses. Students are allowed to mix and

match courses from different bundles based on their interests and career goals. The
program follows a credit-based system, enhancing the academic value of the SECs.

Benefits of SEC
The SEC program offers several key benefits: Flexible learning options: Students can tailor
their learning paths according to their goals and schedules. Diverse course bundles:
Covering various domains, the bundles offer a wide spectrum of skill-building opportunities.

Testimonials and Support Services

Testimonials from previous SEC participants were read out to provide real-life insights into
the program's success and impact. Additionally, information about a dedicated help desk
was shared, offering students guidance on course selection, internship applications, and
general support throughout their SEC journey.

Conclusion
The awareness program effectively communicated the significance of skill enhancement in
career development and introduced the structured support provided by VTU and the SEC
framework. With flexible options, financial incentives, and institutional backing, students
were encouraged to actively participate and make the most of these opportunities to
strengthen their career prospects.

Feedback by Students
The resource person provided a clear and thorough explanation, effectively meeting the
objective of the session. Students gained a comprehensive understanding of the Skill
Enhancement Course (SEC) and its relevance. Civil Engineering students, in particular,
expressed interest in having domain-specific courses offered as part of future internship
opportunities, to further align with their academic and career goals. Some of the topics
suggested: Construction Project Management, BIM for Infrastructure Projects, Structural
Analysis and Design, BOQ Preparation and Cost Estimation etc.
