Candidate name:

Candidate number:

Level: Ordinary Level

Year: 2025

Centre name :Cituripasi Secondary School

Centre number: 090015

Learning area: Geography

Topic: Management of biodiversity.

Subtopic: Soil

Title: Soil Erosion- gully reclamation.

1. STAGE 1: Problem Identification.

i. Problem description
Soil is an important environmental aspect since every living organism resides and relies on soil
for food. Soli is important for agricultural production. However, it has been noted that natural
and human activities in communities around Cituripasi Secondary School promotes soil erosion
that has led to the development of gullies. The gullies make the land unusable and pose danger
to human and animal life.

ii. Statement of intent

The researcher is going to investigate on the ways that can be used to reclaim gullies so
as to make the land usable and conducive for a school. The researcher will compare
different methods that can be used in gully reclamation and then choose apply the best
method in gully reclamation.

iii. Main idea/theme

Gullies should be reclaimed to make the land safe and usable.

iv. Design specification

Educate fellow learners, teachers at Cituripasi Secondary School and community on the
dangers associated with gullies and the ways that can be used in gully reclamation.
Reclaim gullies with fellow learners.

2. STAGE 2: Investigation of related ideas.

i. Existing solutions
ii.
- Construction of drainage channels, culverts and bridges along the road and the
school
- Environmental awareness campaigns on the dangers associated with gullies.
- Ema projects were a lip service
- Caritas provided a tank and gutters for collecting water from classroom blocks and
fenced off the nearby siteto allow regrassing
- People gathered stone to reclaim land but were not put to good use..
- Planting of trees, bunner grasses shrubs and other vegetation to bind soil as way of
preventing soil erosion and gully formation.
-

iii. Possible new ideas.

-filling gullies with stones, sand bags and other material to reclaim gullies and restore
the landscape.
-constructing soil conservation structures such as terraces and contour bunds help to
reduce soil erosion that leads to gully formation.
-policy and legislation to support gully reclamation and prevention of gullies

iv. Choosing the best possible solution

- filling gullies with stones, sand bags and other material to reclaim gullies and restore
the landscape.
-educating the community on the importance and ways of gully reclamation.
Planting shrubs and drought tolerant trees to bind the soil since some shrubs are eaten
by animals or die during drought

3. STAGE 3: GENERATION NO IDEAS.

- Touring the area around the school and identify gullies that need to be reclaimed.
- Concertising the fellow students and the community on the importance of gully
reclamation and the reclaiming of gullies.
- Reclaiming gullies by filling them with sand bags and stones.

4. STAGE 4: DEVELOPMENT OF IDEAS.

- Collection of empty maize meal bags.
- Sourcing of tools such as wheelbarrows, shovels and spades to be used to ferry
stones and fill sand into sacks.
- Concertising fellow learners and the community on the ways and importance of
gully reclamation.
Gully filling will restore the land and make it usable. It will restore the aesthetic beauty
and value of the landscape, and prevent people and animals from falling in and getting
injured.

5. STAGE 5: PRESENTATION OF RESULTS.

- Hold meetings and educate fellow learners on gully reclamation.
- Reclaim gullies by filling them in with stones and sand bags.
-
6. STAGE 6: EVALUATION.
i. Success of the initiative.
-learners toured the community identifying gullies that needed to be reclaimed.
-learners gathered and educated one another on the importance and ways of gully
reclamation
-learners reclaimed three gullies by filling them in with stones and sand bags.

ii. Problems encountered

- Absenteeism by some learners.
- Some parents felt the learners were being abused by making them fill in gullies during
the gully reclamation exercise.
- One of the learners was injured with a stone.
- There high chances of being bitten by scorpions as learners fetched stones.
- The work was tiresome.
- The exercise made learners dirty.
- Time allocated for the project is little.

iii. How the problems were solved

- Wheelbarrow was used to ferry stones.
- Hiring scotch carts, cars.
- Use other methods or means to carry large stones
- Big male learners pushed the wheelbarrow.
- pupils to bring own food.
- Involve other learners, teachers and the community in the in gully reclaiming
- Fund raising towards the project.
- Learners changed into home-clothes during the gully reclamation exercise.
- Learners sang as they ferried stones to make the exercise enjoyable.
- Wearing protective clothes ie safety shoes, worksuits, gloves and masks
iv. Recommendations
- Identify and reclaim as many gullies as possible.
- Involve community leadership, teachers and parents and other stakeholders to
make gully reclamation exercise a success.
- The methods should be used in conjunction with other methods of gully
reclamation and prevention of soil erosion.
- The community should stop the use of slages since it promotes gully formation.
- Gullys need to be reclaimed at an early stage
- It is good to reclaim land using sand, soil rocks, stones rather than grass trees
because they can be destroyed by animals.
- Drought tolerant trees saseland thorny shrubs can be planted since they can
survive the weather in our ward.
