API Standards Overview

API Standards are specifications developed by the American Petroleum Institute for the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries, ensuring quality, safety, reliability, and interchangeability. They cover various aspects such as materials, design, manufacturing, and operations, with common standards including API 5L for line pipe and API 5CT for casing and tubing. These standards are crucial for global compliance, material traceability, and are recognized by major companies in the industry.

API Standards Overview

The API Standard refers to specifications and guidelines developed by the American Petroleum Institute

(API), used mainly in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. These standards ensure quality, safety,

reliability, and interchangeability.

WHAT IS AN API STANDARD?

API Standards are technical specifications for:

- Materials

- Design

- Manufacturing

- Inspection

- Testing

- Operations

They are essential in tubular goods, valves, pumps, refinery equipment, and drilling operations.

COMMON API STANDARDS IN STEEL & TUBULAR INDUSTRIES

| Standard | Title | Usage |

|-----------|------------------------------------------|--------------------------------------|

| API 5L | Line Pipe | Transporting oil, gas, and water |

| API 5CT | Casing and Tubing | For OCTG in drilling |

| API 6A | Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment | Pressure control equipment |

| API Q1 | Quality Management System | Manufacturing in oil & gas |

| API RP 578| Positive Material Identification | Alloy material verification |

| API 6D | Pipeline Valves | Gate, plug, ball valves |

API Standards Overview

| API 1104 | Welding of Pipelines | Pipeline construction |

| API 16A/16C| Drill-Through/Choke and Kill Systems | High-pressure well systems |

EXAMPLE: API 5CT Tubing Standard (for OCTG)

- Grades: J55, K55, L80, N80, P110

- Ends: Plain End (PE), Threaded and Coupled (T&C), Premium

- Tests: Drift Test, Hydrostatic Test, NDT, Hardness Test

- Marking: Heat number, grade, manufacturer code

- Tolerance: Wall thickness ±12.5%, OD ±0.5%

WHY API STANDARDS MATTER

- Global compliance for oil and gas projects

- Ensures material traceability and quality

- Accepted by ADNOC, Aramco, Shell, Total, and others

- Often required for ISO or QMS certification
