Script Nizam C0llege
Locked in the heart of Hyderabad, the City of Pearls, Nizam College shines brightly on the
firmament of the educational landscape of the newly formed state of Telangana.
Established in 1887 during the reign of Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VI, thrugh the
amalgamation of Hyderabad School (Noble School) and Madrasa-I-Aliya in
Gunfoundry,Basheerbagh, Hyderabad. Syed Hussain Bilgrami (Nawab Imad-ul- Mulk), the
then Director of Education founded the college He appointed Dr. Aghorenath Chattopadhyay,
D.Sc. (Edin.) father of Smt.Sarojini Naidu, the Nightingale of India and noted poet Dr.
Harindranath Chattopadhyay, poet as the Principal. The present building was a summer palace of
Paigah Nawab Mulk Fakrul Bahadur, who he gifted it to the college administration. Mr. P. H.
Hodson, the first British Principal.
Initially, under the Madras University, Nizam College became a constituent college of Osmania
University in 1947. It is spread in 20.47 acres with sprawling grounds (built up area is 48562.3
sq.mts)

Courses
The college has transformed the academic map in United Andhra Pradesh and in Telangana
through its variety of courses through its 33 departments offering 24 Undergraduate and 21 post
graduate programmes. Three Certificate, five Diploma, one PG Diploma course find favour
among students. Ten departments offer the doctoral programmes.

Governance
The college runs under the over all administrative framework of Osmania University with Prof.
S.Ramchandram, as Vice Chancellor. It is governed by various academic and administrative
bodies under the able leadership of the Principal, Prof.Lakshmikanth Rathod who has been
working tirelessly to raise the academic benchmarks and visibility of the College nationally and
internationally.
Research Facilities
To provide a better ambience for differently abled (Divyangjan) and to develop a strong sense of
Inclusiveness, the institution provides hostel facilities to Divyangjan
A Cell for the Differently Abled was established in 2013 in addition to the computer lab to
access econtent and a free screen reader software like JAWS, NVDA etc. The audio-files are
available. The students are given “Reader Charges’ to have a reader to facilitate collecting/
reading of study material.
The Cell organizes Louis Braille Day to motivate the Divyangjanse. In June 2018, Nizam
College has entered an MoU with IIIT for focused interventions
Gender related
Being a co educational institution, the College priorities safety of girl students . It has set up
cells and committees like Women Empowerment Cell, Internal Complaint Cell, Grievance
redressal committee to strengthen gender sensitivity and gender equality.
CCTV cameras at vantage points help in providing security and quicker response . the college
works closely with SHE teams of Telangana Police to sensitise girl students and women with
gender related crimes.
The Department of Psychology offers counseling to the students in general and those from the
vulnerable sections, first generation learners, marginal communities, girl students.
The spacious and well ventilated ladies rooms are frequented by girls to spend their leisure ours
Outreach
In order to give back to the society, the college engages in several outreach and extension
activities.
NCC cadets and NSS volunteers participate in Republic Day Celebrations at New Delhi,
Adoption of Village, Anti-Tobacco rally, Peace Rally, WoW (Wealth out of Waste) connects
students with the larger social issues
The College has an MoU with OYSTER a student’s based NGO-Organization by Youth for
Social Transformation and Environmental Recoup (OYSTER) working with Orphanages,
environmental issues etc by involving youth and facilitates various extension programmes.
Three clubs- Bio-Diversity Club , Energy Conservation Club and the Science and Innovation
Club augment the student engagement in learning
The College celebrates the Louis Braille Day with awareness talks on employment
opportunities.
