Environmental Scarcity And Food Insecurity
A.
According to the FAO estimation, there are 840 million undernourished people in the world, and
95% of them are from developing countries.
B.
Environmental scarcity and food insecurity are critical factors that intensify the issue of malnutrition
among people in most developing countries.
C.
protein energy malnutrition (PEM) refers to a form of malnutrition where there is lack of calories
and protein intake. There are two kinds of PEM: the nutritional edema and starvation. They affect
children the most because children have less protein intake than adults. PEM is a fairly common
issue across the world and accounts for 45% of children s death in the global level, which can be
attributed to insufficient food intake.
Second hair illness is also a common deadly form of malnutrition of which kwashiorkor and
marasmus are extreme manifestation.

On Self Respect By Joan Didion
Writer Joan Didion in her essay On Self Respect describes the value of self respect in regards to
her own perspective of what it means. Didion s purpose for this explanatory essay is to explain
what self respect means and its purposes to the intended audience, women. Women are the intended
audience because when this essay was written in the 1960 s, expectations of women were
developing in a way that was no longer related to their roles in society, but their actual character,
specifically physical characteristics and abilities. Didion chooses to write about self respect toward
women because of a personal anecdotementioned in the text, in which she receives a sudden
realization of what self respect truly means and decides to share it with other struggling women in
the 60 s. Didion uses the rhetorical devices of personal anecdotes, allusions, and repetition in her
essay often, which makes her essay overall strong by punctuating many different meanings of self
respect. These rhetorical devices also give her audience an easier understandingof self respect by
providing multiple perspectives and situations of self respect, allowing the audience to make
personal connections with the text. In the beginning of Didion s essay, she provides a personal
anecdote that tells about her own experience of self respect. She begins by stating how innocence
ends when one is stripped of the delusion that one likes oneself , stripped away from a fake self
respect for oneself (215). She then moves to the anecdote, which is a past experience of her not
being elected to Phi Beta Kappa , the oldest honor society in the United States (215). She talks
about how this specific failure could have been more predictable or less ambiguous because she
simply did not have the grades, but she was oblivious to the outcome due to having a fake self
respect by expecting herself to qualify for the society at high expectations with abysmal grades.
Didion uses this anecdote to provide a basis of her credibility and understanding of the subject of
self respect through a personal experience. This anecdote reveals a meaning of what fake and true
self respect is in her personal life, allowing the audience a chance to relate to Didion s

The Letter Of The Visa Card
I did something crazy this weekend and traveled two states away to see my brothers and their
families.
I have a BP visa card from Chase. I was filling our van up with gas in Pennsylvania and it got
declined.
Ironic Occurrence Number 1: My BP Visa Card was declined when I was filling up with gas at a BP
station!
Actually, I didn t know it was declined at the time. The readout at the pump said see cashier . So, I
tried again and it failed again and told me to see cashier again.
He was a nice guy with a Indian accent. Who d a thunk it? A guy from India at a gas station? Yep.
He was very helpful and told me I vas sviping it too vast . So, he came out with me and showed me
how to svipe it slower. And after he did...the result was still see cashier .
Ironic Occurrence Number 2: The gas pump told the cashier he should see himself.
I immediately called the phone number on the back of the card and I spoke to another person
from India. This time I think the person was actually located in India! She told me my credit card
was placed on hold for security reasons. She then asked me all sorts of verifying questions; mother
s maiden name, last four digits of my social security number, whether I was circumcised or not and
then told me everything was okay and my purchases should go through from now on.
