INSTITUTE OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING

(Autonomous)
Dundigal-500043, Hyderabad
B.Tech VI SEMESTER END EXAMINATIONS (SUPPLEMENTARY) - JULY 2024
Regulation: R18
UTILIZATION OF ELECTRIC POWER
Time: 3 Hours (ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING) Max Marks: 70
Answer FIVE Questions choosing ONE question from each module
(NOTE: Provision is given to answer TWO questions from any ONE module)
All Questions Carry Equal Marks
All parts of the question must be answered in one place only

MODULE – I

1. (a) Write a short note on group drives and individual drives. Compare the DC shunt motor and
induction motor in terms of their speed control. [Marks: 7]
(b) Describe the selection of various types of motors for the following services. i) Rolling mills ii) Cranes
and lifts iii) Textile machinery iv) Printing machine and v) Household applications. [Marks: 7]

2. (a) Explain the torque-speed and torque slip characteristics of induction motor with suitable diagram.
[Marks: 7]
(b) Determine its speed when it takes 80 A from this very and the excitation is increased by 20For a
series motor with series field and armature resistance of 0.08 Ω and 0.025, respectively, is connected
across 400-V mains. The armature takes 65 A and its speed is 900 rpm. [Marks: 7]

MODULE – II

3. (a) Outline the principle of dielectric heating. State the merits and demerits of electric heating as
compared with other heating methods. [Marks: 7]
(b) Determine the amount of energy required to melt 2 ton of zinc in 1 hr, if it operates at an efficiency
of 70% specific heat of zinc is equals to 0.1. The latent heat of zinc = 26.67 kcal/kg, the melting
point is 480°C, and the initial temperature is 25°C. [Marks: 7]

4. (a) Compare AC and DC welding. Illustrate with neat diagram about butt welding and spot welding
process. [Marks: 7]
(b) The power required is 200 W for dielectric heating of a slab of resin 150 cm2 in area and 2 cm
thick, frequency of 30 MHz. The material has a relative permittivity of 5 and power factor of 0.05.
Determine the voltage necessary and current flowing through the material. If the voltage is limited
to 600 V, what will be the value of frequency to obtain same heating? [Marks: 7]

MODULE – III

5. (a) Summarize the term luminous efficiency. Explain briefly the various type of lighting systems.
[Marks: 7]
(b) State the laws of illumination. Explain the laws with the help of suitable diagrams, and derive an
equation of the same. [Marks: 7]

6. (a) Explain the principle of operation of gaseous discharge lamps. What are the drawbacks of these
lamps? [Marks: 7]

(b) A room of size 10 × 4 m is to be illuminated by ten 150 W lamps. The MSCP of each lamp is 300.
Assuming a depreciation factor of 0.8 and a utilization factorof 0.5, find the average illumination
produced on the floor. [Marks: 7]

MODULE – IV

7. (a) Explain the following electric braking methods

i) Plugging
ii) Regenerative braking
iii) Rheostat braking [Marks: 7]
(b) Discuss various factors which are taken into account while deciding the changeover from existing
system of electrification to a new system of electrification. [Marks: 7]

8. (a) Draw a typical speed-time curve and explain all the stages considering main-line service.
[Marks: 7]
(b) Elucidate the special electrical features of traction motor. Briefly explain non electric traction
system and electric traction system. [Marks: 7]

MODULE – V

9. (a) Outline about the term coefficient of adhesion. What are the factors that influence the value of
coefficient of adhesion? [Marks: 7]
(b) An electric train has an average speed of 40 kmph on a level track between stops 1,500 m apart. It
is accelerated at 2 kmphps and is braked at 3 kmphps. Draw the speed–time curve for the run.
[Marks: 7]

10. (a) Develop an expression for specific energy output on level track using a simplified speed-time curve.
[Marks: 7]
(b) An electric train has an average speed of 50 kmph on a level track between stops 1,600 m apart. It
is accelerated at 4 kmphps and is braked at 4 kmphps. Draw the speed–time curve for the run.
