Friday in the Second Week of Easter

MEMORIAL OF
SAINT ATHANASIUS, Bishop & Doctor of the Church
P: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
R: Amen
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.
R: And with your Spirit.
P: Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
A brief pause for silence follows. Then all recite together the formula of general confession:
P: I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
And, striking their breast, they say:
through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
Then they continue:
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
The priest says the absolution:
P: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and
bring us to everlasting life.
R: Amen
P: Lord, have mercy. R: Lord, have mercy.
P: Christ, have mercy. R: Christ, have mercy.
P: Lord, have mercy. R: Lord, have mercy.
COLLECT

The Priest, with hands joined, says:

P: Let us pray.
And all pray in silence with the Priest for a while. Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the
Collect prayer.

Almighty ever-living God,

who raised up the Bishop Saint Athanasius
as an outstanding champion of your Son’s divinity,
mercifully grant,
that, rejoicing in his teaching and his protection,
we may never cease to grow
in knowledge and love of you.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
At the end of which the people acclaim:
R: Amen

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Acts 5:34-42
The Apostles went out rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake
of the name.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

A Pharisee in the Sanhedrin named Gamaliel,
a teacher of the law, respected by all the people,
stood up, ordered the Apostles to be put outside for a short time,
and said to the Sanhedrin, “Fellow children of Israel,
be careful what you are about to do to these men.
Some time ago, Theudas appeared, claiming to be someone important,
and about four hundred men joined him, but he was killed,
and all those who were loyal to him
were disbanded and came to nothing.
After him came Judas the Galilean at the time of the census.
He also drew people after him,
but he too perished and all who were loyal to him were scattered.
So now I tell you,
have nothing to do with these men, and let them go.
For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin,
it will destroy itself.
But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them;
you may even find yourselves fighting against God.”
They were persuaded by him.
After recalling the Apostles, they had them flogged,
ordered them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus,
and dismissed them.
So they left the presence of the Sanhedrin,
rejoicing that they had been found worthy
to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.
And all day long, both at the temple and in their homes,
they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Christ, Jesus.

The Word of the Lord

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14

R. One thing I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
R. One thing I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord.
One thing I ask of the LORD
this I seek:
To dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD
and contemplate his temple.
R. One thing I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord.

I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD

in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage;
be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.
R. One thing I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord.
Acclamation before the Gospel: Mt 4:4b
℟. Alleluia, alleluia.
One does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.
℟. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel John 6:1-15

Jesus distributed to those who were reclining as much as they wanted

X A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

JOHN
Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee.
A large crowd followed him,
because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.
Jesus went up on the mountain,
and there he sat down with his disciples.
The Jewish feast of Passover was near.
When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to
him,
he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?”
He said this to test him,
because he himself knew what he was going to do.
Philip answered him,
“Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough
for each of them to have a little.”
One of his disciples,
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish;
but what good are these for so many?”
Jesus said, “Have the people recline.”
Now there was a great deal of grass in that place.
So the men reclined, about five thousand in number.
Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks,
and distributed them to those who were reclining,
and also as much of the fish as they wanted.
When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples,
“Gather the fragments left over,
so that nothing will be wasted.”
So they collected them,
and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments
from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.
When the people saw the sign he had done, they said,
“This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.”
Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off
to make him king,
he withdrew again to the mountain alone.
The Gospel of the Lord.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

P: Dear brothers and sisters,
filled with paschal joy,
let us pray more earnestly to God
that he, who graciously listened
to the prayers and supplications of his beloved Son,
may now be pleased to look upon us in our lowliness.
For every prayer we shall say:
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER
For the shepherds of our souls,
that they may have the strength to govern wisely
the flock entrusted to them by the Good Shepherd,
let us pray to the Lord. (R)
For the College of Cardinals,
that they may have the wisdom of the Holy Spirit
in this time that they are tasked to select among them
the new pontiff
let us pray to the Lord. (R)
For the whole world,
that it may truly know the peace given by Christ,
let us pray to the Lord. (R)
For our brothers and sisters who suffer,
that their sorrow may be turned to gladness
which no one can take from them,
let us pray to the Lord. (R)
For our company - Asalus Corporation - Intellicare, Avega Managed Care,
Aegel Mngt and Dev't Inc., Aventus Medical Care, Inc. and Fullerton
Health, that with the grace of God
we may be fruitful with graces and blessings,
let us pray to the Lord. (R)

For our own community and families,

that it may bear witness with great confidence
to the Resurrection of Christ,
let us pray to the Lord. (R)
For the soul of Pope Francis, those in purgatory and all the dead,
that as witnesses to the Resurrection of Christ
they may be found worthy to join the banquet in heaven,
let us pray to the Lord. (R)
We pray for our personal intentions (pause), let us pray to the Lord. (R).
P: O God, who know that our life in this present age
is subject to suffering and need,
hear the desires of those who cry to you
and receive the prayers
of those devoted to the Most Sacred Heart of your Son.
Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit
Now and for ever.
R. Amen.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

P: Look, O Lord, upon the offerings we present to you
in commemoration of Saint Athanasius,
and may witnessing to your truth
bring salvation to those
who profess, as he did, an unblemished faith.
Through Christ our Lord.

R: Amen

PREFACE OF HOLY PASTORS

The presence of holy Pastors in the Church

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

V. Lift up your hearts.

R. We lift them up to the Lord.

V. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

R. It is right and just.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

For, as on the festival of Saint Athanasius

you bid your Church rejoice,
so, too, you strengthen her by the example of his holy life,
teach her by his words of preaching,
and keep her safe in answer to his prayers.

And so, with the company of Angels and Saints,

we sing the hymn of your praise,
as without end we acclaim:

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Then, with hands joined, the Priest says:

P: Let us pray.
After a brief pause for silence, unless silence has just been observed, he extends his hands and
says the Prayer after Communion

Grant us, we pray, almighty God,

that the true divinity of your Only Begotten Son,
which we firmly profess with Saint Athanasius,
may, through this Sacrament,
ever give us life and protection.
Through Christ our Lord.
R: Amen

SOLEMN BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

P: The Lord be with you.
R: and with your spirit.
P: Bow down for the blessing.
Then the Priest, with hands outstretched over the people, says the prayer:

P: May the Christian people exult, O Lord,

at the glorification of the illustrious members
of your Son’s Body,
and may they gain a share in the eternal lot
of the Saints on whose feast day
they reaffirm their devotion to you,
rejoicing with them for ever in your glory.
Through Christ our Lord.
R: Amen.
P: And may the blessing of almighty God,
the Father, and the Son, X and the Holy Spirit,
come down on you and remain with you for ever.
R: Amen,

P: Go forth the mass is ended.

R: thanks be to God.
