Research Proposal: Substance Abuse among Teacher Trainees

Research Proposal: Substance Abuse among Teacher Trainees

Introduction

Substance abuse among youth, especially in institutions of higher learning, is a growing national concern. In

teacher training institutions, this issue threatens the future of the education sector, as substance-abusing

trainees may become incompetent or unethical professionals. Substances commonly abused include alcohol,

cannabis, tobacco, khat (miraa), and prescription drugs. Various socio-economic and psychological factors

contribute to this behavior. This study seeks to investigate the extent of this issue within teacher training

institutions to propose appropriate interventions.

Despite efforts by school administrations, families, and government bodies to control substance abuse,

teacher trainees continue to fall victim to drug misuse. This raises concerns over their academic

performance, personal health, and future role as educators. The problem is under-researched in many

colleges, making it difficult to implement effective preventive measures.

Literature Review

A review of previous research indicates high levels of substance abuse in tertiary institutions due to peer

influence, mental health issues, and social-economic challenges. Studies by NACADA and MOE report

increasing trends of drug use among college students, but little has been done specifically on teacher

trainees. This study will fill that gap by contextualizing the problem.

Methodology

Research Approach:

A mixed-methods approach (quantitative + qualitative) will be used to gain both statistical data and deeper

insights. This will allow a broader understanding of the issue.

Sampling Techniques:

Stratified random sampling will be applied to ensure fair representation across year groups and genders. A

sample of 100 teacher trainees will be selected.

Data Collection Tools:

A questionnaire will be used with closed and open-ended questions. Sample items:

1. What substances have you ever used?

2. How often do you use any substance?

3. What led you to begin using substances?

4. Have you noticed any academic effects related to drug use?

5. What support systems are available in your institution?

Data Analysis:

Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative responses will be thematically

analyzed to identify patterns.
