Introduction
Substance abuse among youth, especially in institutions of higher learning, is a growing national concern. In
teacher training institutions, this issue threatens the future of the education sector, as substance-abusing
trainees may become incompetent or unethical professionals. Substances commonly abused include alcohol,
cannabis, tobacco, khat (miraa), and prescription drugs. Various socio-economic and psychological factors
contribute to this behavior. This study seeks to investigate the extent of this issue within teacher training

Literature Review
A review of previous research indicates high levels of substance abuse in tertiary institutions due to peer
influence, mental health issues, and social-economic challenges. Studies by NACADA and MOE report
increasing trends of drug use among college students, but little has been done specifically on teacher
trainees. This study will fill that gap by contextualizing the problem.
