FAX/FACSIMILE

The word fax comes from FACSIMILE which is the


transmission of an exact copy or reproduction of a document.
Fax is done through a fax machine; the machine first scans the
document and then transmits the copy at the other line through
telephone line.
It is useful for transmitting visual material like diagrams,
illustrations, photographs or artwork. Like email, the word Fax
can be used as a noun or as verb.
Telex machine only allow exchange of text while fax can send
pictures, graphics, designs etc.
Same telephone line can be used for making voice calls and
receiving fax but not simultaneously.

HISTORY OF FACSIMILE MACHINE

• In 1843, The first fax machine was invented by Scottish mechanic and inventor
Alexander Bain.
• Later, in 1964, Xerox Corporation introduced (and patented) what many consider to
be the first commercialized version of the modern fax machine, under the name
(LDX) or Long Distance Xerography.
• Usually thermal paper is to be used in the machine while plain paper fax machines
are relatively expensive.

How Does it Work ?

At the sending machine, there has been


an optical sensor which read the paper.
The modern FAX machine, however, has
a paper feed mechanism so that it is easy
to send multi-pages faxes.

The black and white spots that the optical


sensor reads are encoded and travel
through a phone line

At the receiving machine, the


information is decoded and sent to the
printer which marks the paper with black
or color dots or prints.

Faxes

 Characteristics:
 Speedy and Instant transmission of the message
 Court tested and thereby accepted in legal cases
 Confidentiality cannot be maintained
 Cannot be used as original e.g. Faxed bill of lading is not
accepted
 Can be sent from a computer
 Preparation for Transmission:
 Check that you have the correct fax number;
 Check the papers quality
 Use a fax transmission cover form/transmittal that will ensure
that the fax reaches its intended recipient safely.

2. Prepare a short FAX for sending to your branch office at
Bhaluka asking the Manager to bring the monthly reports
to the Head Office.
3. You have issued a cheque for Tk.1,00,000 to M/S Metro
Ltd. Prepare a FAX for sending to the bank requesting that
the payment should be stopped for the issued cheque.
