C. Developing and Deepening Understanding

After processing the question, you may transition from the text to the
SUB-TOPIC 1: discussion about explanatory text. You may use this prompt:
 Explication
"We've just read a wonderful story about Christmas traditions and memories
in the Philippines. Now, let's think about how this story not only shares
Daphne's personal experiences but also explains different aspects of her
family's Christmas celebrations. This brings us to an important type of writing
called 'explanatory text.' Just like Daphne explained how her family
celebrates Christmas and described the special foods and traditions they
have, explanatory texts help us understand how or why something happens.
One key element of explanatory texts is the glossary, which provides
definitions for specific terms and ensures readers fully understand the
content. By learning about glossaries, we can improve our ability to explain
and share our own experiences and knowledge clearly. Let's learn more
about what explanatory texts are and how we can use them to effectively
communicate our ideas."

a. Divide the class into small groups.

Worked Example b. Provide each group with chart paper and markers.
c. Ask each group to complete the key points of Daphne’s explanation of her
Christmas traditions by supplying three (3) details that explain them. They
should note how she explains the traditions and why they are significant. The
first one is done for you.

After completing the table, ask the students to write a glossary for this text.
The words used during the unlocking of content vocabulary should be
included in the glossary. You may ask your students to add more words from
the text that they think needs defining.
Discuss with your students the answers and why the explanatory details are
necessary to understand the text and how the glossary helps in
understanding the text.

Lesson Activity Write a short paragraph describing your own Christmas traditions. How do
they compare to the author's experience?

Imagine you were invited to the author’s ancestral house for Christmas.
Describe your experience in a short narrative.

D. Making Generalization Discuss with your partner what you have learned about explanatory texts.
Explain how linking words and phrases help in writing clear and cohesive
explanations. Share an example of a topic you could write an explanatory text
about and explain how you would organize your steps using linking words.
V. EVALUATING LEARNING: FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT AND TEACHER’S REFLECTION
Formative Assessment Create a visual postcard or digital collage that represents what a Filipino
Christmas looks like to you.
