Note from Sylvia Theissen, PTA President

I can hardly believe this is the last month of school. What a year. It has been busy and filled with change. The teachers worked hard to prepare the students for the new STAAR testing and for End-ofCourse exams, and our students have responded with hard work and determination. Lets remember to thank our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7th through 11th. We have such great teachers, please take the time to send a small note of appreciation. Thank you to everyone who donated books and attended the NEISD book sale. It was another huge success. The English department will get their check (and it should be a good one!) very soon. I would like to thank the 2011-2012 PTA Officers and PTA Board for their dedication this year. It has been a pleasure to work with each one of you. The 2011-2012 PTA year ran incredibly smoothly due to your commitment and hard work. I would like to congratulate and introduce the 2012-2013 PTA officers: Stacy Husted, 1st VP; Monica Piles, 2nd VP; Yvonne Poe, Secretary; Stephanie Nemec, Treasurer; Tanya Gill, Historian; Amianne Snethkamp, Parliamentarian. I will return as the President and am looking forward to another great year. There are still a few slots on the PTA Board that need to be filled. Look for an article regarding the positions in this newsletter. The Executive Board and the General Membership have approved the following Gift to School - $2500 to put toward the purchase of a new Sound System. The 8th graders will have their end of year party at Time Warner Park on the last day of school. An article with all the details can be found in the newsletter. Should be a lot of fun. In closing, I would like to thank everyone who supported the PTA this year. I have been amazed at the number of volunteers needed for the many PTA programs and activities. I especially would like to thank those of you who responded to those last minute requests for help. Thank you all for being so willing to work and for being so very flexible. Lets finish the year strong

PRINCIPAL SHELTONS NOTES

As the 2011-2012 school year comes to a close, it is time to reflect on a job well done! We started our year with the emphasis on Stand Up and Make a Difference. Our T-Wolves have tried to do that on a daily basis. We have introduced the Seven habits at Tejeda and continue to work on best practices in order to be productive on a daily basis. You have supported us on a daily basis and we appreciate the opportunity to work with a fabulous community. We have ended our third day this week of STAAR testing and we are all ready for testing to come to a close so we can resume a regular schedule. Your children have really been good and have made every effort to comply with all the rules that the state sets forth. For students in Algebra we still have the End Of Course exam. That will be a great day for the remainder of the 8th grade math students as they will have the opportunity to learn about banking and every day Math from members of our business community. I will end this letter with the end of the year schedule so you can plan accordingly. It has been an honor to witness your children in each performance, concert, presentation, and competition. We had two great days for campus beautification and History Faire. Thank you to each of you who participated with us. Not only is it rewarding to see your students compete and perform, but to observe them daily as they interact with one another, reminds us that being a T-Wolf is an honor. We continue to monitor areas for improvement and your communication has been a great tool to allow growth. As you know, we are challenged with social media and the impact that this can have on our children. This has been a concern of mine this year. I trust that as we move forward into next year that we can work together to continue to educate our children on the impact that technology has made on students of this generation. As a school we will continue to brainstorm on ways to inform and discourage inappropriate use of our communication devices. As we move into next year we will continue to strive for excellence in education on a daily basis. As soon as we firm up the dates for Howl at the Moon and Pup camp, I will let you know. Thank you for all that you do to support and stand beside the school. You are a magnificent support for our school! Links for a Cure by Maddie Hinojosa

Bright and colorful paper links weave around the 8th grade floor of Tejeda Middle School. Symbolizing hope, dedication, and determination, they are sure hard to miss. These links are part of a charity that is trying to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. I think its great that we are trying to help people with Cystic Fibrosis. NJHS officer Angie Rosado says. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. It clogs the lungs, leads to life threatening lung infections, and shortens the life span of the people with this disease. Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has dedicated time, money, and countless efforts to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. Over the past 3 years, the Tejeda Middle School NJHS organization has sold paper links and has donated all of the proceeds to the CF Foundation to help fund research and charity events to help find a cure. I think this is a wonderful charity that we are raising money for. Our NJHS kids do a wonderful job of selling the links. States Mrs.Voo, one of our NJHS sponsors. This year was no exception. Our NJHS members sold over 1,000 links and rose over $1,000 to help this cause. Overall, we are very pleased with the outcome of this project. Seeing the links has truly been an inspiration to me and the club. As member Katarina Morales tells me, This was a great group to raise money for. Having the links gave us a visual of our progress and how much we had risen. It shows how people can come together to raise money for a good cause. and I couldnt agree more. I would like to thank everybody who contributed and made this all possible. With this project, we are one link closer to a cure.

Stand Up and Make a Difference! Part 2

The PE/HEALTH/Dance departments came together on March 8th, and had a guest speaker from the JDRFoundation (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). A power point presentation was given on the cause/effects of diabetes and information was provided on the normality of a Type I or Type II person who functions greatly with the support of technology as well as the devices that help them function more effectively. We kicked off a fund raiser to help support research that day and students had ONE month to collect donations. On March 30th, we celebrated with a run on the track to celebrate donations. Our students raised $1019.86! Tejeda families always do a wonderful job of supporting and we want to thank all that gave donations to help better the lives of those effected by diabetes. THANK YOU!! - Jean Curtis

Counselors Corner
Stay Involved With Your Middle School Student: Your child may act like she wishes you would disappear sometimes. But when it comes to middle school kids, success comes when parents are around. When parents get involved in learning, student achievement soars. Middle graders score higher on tests, turn in better projects, and participate more in class if they know their parents care. They show their care by being involved. You can become more involved in your childs learning at any time of the day. Talk about homework during dinner. Watch a documentary at night together. Visit a museum or the zoo on the weekend. Youll show your child that you think learning is important. Another avenue to become involved in your childs learning is to volunteer. You can talk to the teachers, PTA, and sponsors to see what help they might need in the classroom, at events or at clubs at the school. There are many ways to show your support for your school and your child.

WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative program of the National Center for Fathering focusing on the prevention of violence in our nations schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose: 1) to provide an unobtrusive presence in the schools, and 2) to be a positive and active role-model for students at their school. WATCH D.O.G.S. was founded by Jim Moore, a concerned father who chose to take action in response to a 1998 middle-school shooting in Jonesboro, AR. WATCH D.O.G.S. serves to inspire and equip men to be the involved fathers, grandfathers and father-figures their students need. The Tejeda PTA will announce a formal launch of the WATCH D.O.G.S. program very soon, in the mean time, if you have previously volunteered as a Watch DOGS, and are DPS cleared, please contact John Ramirez, Watch DOGS Coordinator, for immediate volunteer opportunities. For more information, visit the WATCH D.O.G.S. website at www.fathers.com/watchdogs, or e-mail John Ramirez atjnjram@gmail.com or call 210-867-8648.

In manufacturing Smencils, recycled newspapers, environmentally friendly fragrances, corn-based biodegradable plastic tubes, and biodegradable erasers are utilized. As we like to say: Saving trees one pencil or pen at a time. 100% of the profit from the Smencils/ Smens is used to keep Tejedas campus beautiful!

Tejeda Clubs

Did you know that if everyone in the US recycled just 10% of their newspapers, we would save about 25 million trees each year?
We are also recycling HEB bags! We recycle through the company Enviro-Bag, and for every pound of bags, the Green Club gets one dollar. However, we can only accept HEB bags. There is a specified bin outside of the front office at Tejeda for HEB bags. Did you know that it takes 91 percent less energy to recycle a pound of plastic than it takes to recycle a pound of paper? We also recycle empty ink cartridges, used or broken cell phones, and other small electronics. The school has partnered with Eco-phone to recycle these items, and there is also a bin for collection by the front office. With the money collected from recycling, the Green club will give back to the school

Tejedas 10th District Championship UIL Win

For 10 of the past 11 years since the school was founded, Frank M. Tejeda Middle School has won the District Championship in UIL competition. The team captured 2012s title March 24. UIL stands for University Interscholastic League a series of academic meets where students compete in events such as Calculator, Maps, Charts & Graphs, Science and non-academic events like theatre arts and Lincoln Douglas Debate. Over the past 11 years, Tejedas UIL teams have collected 41 first-place sweepstakes trophies and 2 second place trophies. This years championship victory hung on the results of the performances by Tejedas 8th graders, said Lynn Bodet, faculty sponsor. Lopezs team was ahead prior to the 8th grade events. Tejedas 8th graders took the top 4 places in Map, Charts & Graphs; first, third, fourth and sixth in Calculator and second, third, and a fourth place tie in Spelling, she added, rising to the challenge before them. It was a great day to be alive and be a T-wolf, she said. Tejedas 6th graders won 7 gold medals out of 8 events. Sandra Moon took first in both Number Sense and Math; Kevin Guerra won Maps, Charts & Graphs; Nitesh Kartha won Calculator; Haydn Rich and Saketh Amasa tied for first in Spelling, and Vikas Dodda won Dictionary Skills. Seventh grader Meredith Floyd won Spelling, Angel Hernandez won Social Studies and Jonathan Yakey won Science. Katie Roper led the eighth graders by winning Maps, Charts & Graphs and Calculator. Adam Goodson won Dictionary Skills. The academic competitors also participate in TMSCA (Texas Math & Science Coaches Association) meets across the region, which culminated in a State meet April 14. Tejeda attended 5 TMSCA meets this school year, taking home 3 first place trophies and 2 second place trophies. Tejeda qualified a record 35 students for the State meet, more than all of the other NEISD schools combined, Bodet said. More than 1800 students compete in State each year, and most events have over 200 students per grade level, she added. Tejedas top finisher was Sandra Moon, who won a 16th place medal in Math and placed 21st in Number Sense. Tejeda also was the highest finishing NEISD team in Calculator, Bodet reported.

Tejeda's 11th History Faire draws crowd of more than 2,000

by Kristen Brunner

An estimated 2,000 people experienced the Medieval Ages, military battles and the wild, wild West as it came alive at Tejeda's 11th Annual History Faire and Culture Fest Saturday, March 31. Tejeda's Young Historian's Club planned and executed the Faire, which is known throughout the community. Participants stepped back in time to visit various hands-on historical exhibits, including jousting, cooking on a campfire, crafts and military equipment demonstrations by groups depicting Rough Riders, Native Americans, Buffalo Soldiers and Vikings. The Army even flew in a Blackhawk helicopter, similar to the ones currently serving in combat with our troops in Afghanistan. Musical and dance presentations entertained families while they enjoyed snow cones, kettle corn, grilled shrimp and chicken kabobs and other delicious treats. Some studentshad their hair and faces painted by the Tejeda PALS. "I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Baumann deserve a lot of credit for their hard work," said Mr. Guzman, 6th grade social studies teacher and Young Historians sponsor. Mr. Guzman added that he would like to see more groups and more people attend next year's Faire. Tejeda is keeping history fun and alive!

"Guys and Dolls Jr." Plays on the Tejeda Stage

The Tejeda Middle School Theatre Department celebrates its third production of the season with the Tony Award-winning sensation "Guys and Dolls Jr." on May 10 and 11, 2012. Hailed by critics as "the perfect musical," the show balances comedy, romance, and breathtaking dance routines, including the show-stoppers, "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" and "Luck Be a Lady." "Guys and Dolls" is about gambling men and the women who long to tame them. The story is set in colorful Times Square in the 1940's, populated by missionaries, dancing girls, gangsters and cops. As the show begins, Nathan Detroit is desperately trying to find a place for his floating craps game, despite the protests of Adelaide, his fianc of 14 years, who wants him to quit gambling and marry her. In an effort to fund his latest game, he bets high roller Sky Masterson that he can't lure Sarah Brown, a beautiful missionary, to travel to Cuba with him. Bets turn to romance as Masterson plots to win the bet, and ends up losing his heart. The production stars Madalyn Cleer (Thurs) and Ryan Crim (Fri) as Sarah Brown, Dylan Gonzales as Sky Masterson, David Lunan as Nathan Detroit, and Rebecca Oquendo (Thurs) and Victoria Villa (Fri) as Adelaide. Ashton Simeon and Preston Perez co-star as Nicely Nicely Johnson and Benny Southstreet. All students in a full year theatre class are participating in the production as either cast or crew. Veronica Pea-Montalvo directs with Victoria Blom and Donna Pennington doing choreography for the dance numbers. "Guys and Dolls Jr." will play at the Tejeda Middle School cafetorium on Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets: $7 for all reserved seating, $5 for general adult admission, $3 for general student (ages 5-17) admission. For tickets and information, call the Tejeda Theatre office at (210) 356-5600 x 65657.

Successful Author Visit!

Mr. Adam Gidwitzs visit to the Tejeda library Friday April 13th was anything but dark and grim. The author of A Tale Dark and Grimm, was amazing and had the kids attention from the moment they walked into the library. He signed books, spoke with the kids and encouraged them to keep writing no matter what. The word that kept coming through the crowd of kids as they left was AWESOME!

Sarah Anders, Adam Gidwitz, and Adeola Dosunmu

Dietitians Diary May 2012

Katie Mahoney, M.S., R.D., L.D. Nutrition Education / Wellness Coordinator School Nutrition Services Stay Healthy This Summer!
Summer is almost here and as the weather gets warmer, the desire to stay inside (and out of the heat) gets stronger. However, staying inside too much can cause you and your family to develop unhealthy habits. During the school year, most of us have a daily routine that we follow. The summer months are typically not as regimented. Here are some tips to help you ensure that your summer will be healthy and enjoyable!

Drink Water! It is very easy to turn to soft drinks or other refreshing drinks during the hot summer months, but most of those drinks are loaded with calories and sugar. Drink calorie-free, guilt-free water to stay hydrated. Watch Your Weight. The lack of a daily routine, which can lead to more frequent trips to the drive-through, can lead to weight gain. Try to plan ahead and pack a healthy lunch to take with you. Road Trips. Planning a road trip? Make it a healthy one by doing your homework on the healthier food options at popular restaurants and fast food joints that youll run into along the way. Develop an Eating and Snack Schedule. Keeping you and your kids on an eating schedule will help cut down hunger and mindless eating between meals. Take Advantage of the Season! The summer months are the perfect time to try new fruits and veggies. Refreshing watermelon, sweet strawberries, and crisp carrots are just a few of the choices to help you stay cool in the sweltering heat. Re-think Your Vacation. It might be too late to re-think your vacation this year, but if its not, consider taking an active vacation. Take a vacation that encourages physical activities like hiking, swimming, walking, or cycling.

Limit Screen Time. Its hot outside. Theres nothing to do. Why not watch TV? Some screen time is okay, but TV watching, video game playing, and time spent on the computer should take up no more than two hours per day, total.
