Note From Sylvia Theissen, PTA President: Save The Date!
Note From Sylvia Theissen, PTA President: Save The Date!
I can hardly believe this is the last month of school. What a year. It has been busy and filled with change. The teachers worked hard to prepare the students for the new STAAR testing and for End-ofCourse exams, and our students have responded with hard work and determination. Lets remember to thank our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7th through 11th. We have such great teachers, please take the time to send a small note of appreciation. Thank you to everyone who donated books and attended the NEISD book sale. It was another huge success. The English department will get their check (and it should be a good one!) very soon. I would like to thank the 2011-2012 PTA Officers and PTA Board for their dedication this year. It has been a pleasure to work with each one of you. The 2011-2012 PTA year ran incredibly smoothly due to your commitment and hard work. I would like to congratulate and introduce the 2012-2013 PTA officers: Stacy Husted, 1st VP; Monica Piles, 2nd VP; Yvonne Poe, Secretary; Stephanie Nemec, Treasurer; Tanya Gill, Historian; Amianne Snethkamp, Parliamentarian. I will return as the President and am looking forward to another great year. There are still a few slots on the PTA Board that need to be filled. Look for an article regarding the positions in this newsletter. The Executive Board and the General Membership have approved the following Gift to School - $2500 to put toward the purchase of a new Sound System. The 8th graders will have their end of year party at Time Warner Park on the last day of school. An article with all the details can be found in the newsletter. Should be a lot of fun. In closing, I would like to thank everyone who supported the PTA this year. I have been amazed at the number of volunteers needed for the many PTA programs and activities. I especially would like to thank those of you who responded to those last minute requests for help. Thank you all for being so willing to work and for being so very flexible. Lets finish the year strong
Friday, May 25 - Social Studies (Day 2), Science (Day 2) Parents: This reflects our schedule for our final tests of the year. Due to the length of some tests, and in order to provide ample time, a few subjects have been allotted two days. We believe it is important for students to have a week set aside to learn how to better prepare for comprehensive assessments. We wanted to make sure you were aware in advance in order for you to plan accordingly. During this week our goal is to focus on test preparation and study skills. Tuesday, May 29 8th grade Awards Ceremony at Johnson (by invitation) 6:30 Wednesday, May 30 6th grade Awards Ceremony at Tejeda (by invitation) 8:45 7th grade Awards Ceremony at Tejeda (by invitation) 10:00 This list is not intended to be all inclusive and the final word is with the coach and or teacher. MONEY MATTERS As of November 1, 2004, North East ISD has established the following policy for accepting checks and collecting bad checks: For a check to be an acceptable form of payment, it must include your current and accurate name, address, telephone number, drivers license number and state. In the event your check is returned for non-payment, the face value may be recovered electronically along with a state allowed recovery fee. In the event your check is returned for non-payment, checks will no longer be an acceptable form of payment for the remainder of the school year.

Counselors Corner
Stay Involved With Your Middle School Student: Your child may act like she wishes you would disappear sometimes. But when it comes to middle school kids, success comes when parents are around. When parents get involved in learning, student achievement soars. Middle graders score higher on tests, turn in better projects, and participate more in class if they know their parents care. They show their care by being involved. You can become more involved in your childs learning at any time of the day. Talk about homework during dinner. Watch a documentary at night together. Visit a museum or the zoo on the weekend. Youll show your child that you think learning is important. Another avenue to become involved in your childs learning is to volunteer. You can talk to the teachers, PTA, and sponsors to see what help they might need in the classroom, at events or at clubs at the school. There are many ways to show your support for your school and your child.

WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative program of the National Center for Fathering focusing on the prevention of violence in our nations schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose: 1) to provide an unobtrusive presence in the schools, and 2) to be a positive and active role-model for students at their school. WATCH D.O.G.S. was founded by Jim Moore, a concerned father who chose to take action in response to a 1998 middle-school shooting in Jonesboro, AR. WATCH D.O.G.S. serves to inspire and equip men to be the involved fathers, grandfathers and father-figures their students need. The Tejeda PTA will announce a formal launch of the WATCH D.O.G.S. program very soon, in the mean time, if you have previously volunteered as a Watch DOGS, and are DPS cleared, please contact John Ramirez, Watch DOGS Coordinator, for immediate volunteer opportunities. For more information, visit the WATCH D.O.G.S. website at www.fathers.com/watchdogs, or e-mail John Ramirez atjnjram@gmail.com or call 210-867-8648.

GREEN Club is now selling new limited edition Smencils (smelly pencils)! We have Earth Smencils that come with an Earth theme cap. The scents are Save A Tree, Apple Harvest, Mm Mm Maple, Cotton Cloud & Sunshine. We are also selling Soccer Smencils that come with a soccer ball theme cap. The scents are Juicy Melon, Cherry Vanilla, Sorta Soda, Gum-E Bear, Razzle Berry, Pom Paya, Syrup-Dippity, Waffle Cone, Pearrrfect & Kinda Cola. Each soccer ball is a different color. All Smencils are $1! They are sold every Thursday before and after school. Smencils are $1, and Smens (smelly pens) are $2. They are made from 100% recycled newspapers. They are rolled from sheets of newspaper instead of wood. You can even see the layers of newspaper when you sharpen the pencils. Not only do they smell great, but theyre good for the environment, too! Being responsible for the environment is an important part of doing business in today's world. In manufacturing Smencils, recycled newspapers, environmentally friendly fragrances, corn-based biodegradable plastic tubes, and biodegradable erasers are utilized. As we like to say: Saving trees one pencil or pen at a time. 100% of the profit from the Smencils/ Smens is used to keep Tejedas campus beautiful!
Tejeda Clubs
Did you know that if everyone in the US recycled just 10% of their newspapers, we would save about 25 million trees each year?
We are also recycling HEB bags! We recycle through the company Enviro-Bag, and for every pound of bags, the Green Club gets one dollar. However, we can only accept HEB bags. There is a specified bin outside of the front office at Tejeda for HEB bags. Did you know that it takes 91 percent less energy to recycle a pound of plastic than it takes to recycle a pound of paper? We also recycle empty ink cartridges, used or broken cell phones, and other small electronics. The school has partnered with Eco-phone to recycle these items, and there is also a bin for collection by the front office. With the money collected from recycling, the Green club will give back to the school

An estimated 2,000 people experienced the Medieval Ages, military battles and the wild, wild West as it came alive at Tejeda's 11th Annual History Faire and Culture Fest Saturday, March 31. Tejeda's Young Historian's Club planned and executed the Faire, which is known throughout the community. Participants stepped back in time to visit various hands-on historical exhibits, including jousting, cooking on a campfire, crafts and military equipment demonstrations by groups depicting Rough Riders, Native Americans, Buffalo Soldiers and Vikings. The Army even flew in a Blackhawk helicopter, similar to the ones currently serving in combat with our troops in Afghanistan. Musical and dance presentations entertained families while they enjoyed snow cones, kettle corn, grilled shrimp and chicken kabobs and other delicious treats. Some studentshad their hair and faces painted by the Tejeda PALS. "I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Mrs. Freeman and Mrs. Baumann deserve a lot of credit for their hard work," said Mr. Guzman, 6th grade social studies teacher and Young Historians sponsor. Mr. Guzman added that he would like to see more groups and more people attend next year's Faire. Tejeda is keeping history fun and alive!

Drink Water! It is very easy to turn to soft drinks or other refreshing drinks during the hot summer months, but most of those drinks are loaded with calories and sugar. Drink calorie-free, guilt-free water to stay hydrated. Watch Your Weight. The lack of a daily routine, which can lead to more frequent trips to the drive-through, can lead to weight gain. Try to plan ahead and pack a healthy lunch to take with you. Road Trips. Planning a road trip? Make it a healthy one by doing your homework on the healthier food options at popular restaurants and fast food joints that youll run into along the way. Develop an Eating and Snack Schedule. Keeping you and your kids on an eating schedule will help cut down hunger and mindless eating between meals. Take Advantage of the Season! The summer months are the perfect time to try new fruits and veggies. Refreshing watermelon, sweet strawberries, and crisp carrots are just a few of the choices to help you stay cool in the sweltering heat. Re-think Your Vacation. It might be too late to re-think your vacation this year, but if its not, consider taking an active vacation. Take a vacation that encourages physical activities like hiking, swimming, walking, or cycling.
Limit Screen Time. Its hot outside. Theres nothing to do. Why not watch TV? Some screen time is okay, but TV watching, video game playing, and time spent on the computer should take up no more than two hours per day, total.
