A diac is a bidirectional semiconductor switch that can be turned on in both forward and reverse polarities. It has a P-N-P-N layered structure with no control terminal. A diac conducts current only when the applied voltage exceeds its breakover voltage, then it remains conducting until the current drops below the holding current. Diacs are commonly used to assist in the triggering of triacs in AC switching circuits like lamp dimmers and heat controls.

INTRODUCTION

A diac is an important member of the thyristor family and is usually employed for triggering triacs. A diac is a full-wave or bi-directional semiconductor switch that can be turned on in both forward and reverse polarities. Indeed the name diac means diode AC switch The diac is widely used to assist even triggering of a triac when used in AC switches

CONSTRUCTION OF DIAC

A diac is a P-N-P-N structured four-layer, twoterminal semiconductor device. MT2 and MTX are the two main terminals of the device. There is no control terminal in this device.

CONTRUCTION OF DIAC

From the diagram, a diac unlike a diode, resembles a bipolar junction transistor (BJT) but with the following exceptions. there is no terminal attached to the middle layer (base), the three regions are nearly identical in size, the doping level at the two end P-layers is the same so that the device gives symmetrical switching characteristics for either polarity of the applied voltage.

BASIC OPERATION

Diac only conduct the current when the breakdown voltage exceeded When the breakdown voltage is exceeded, the resistance increase rapidly cause the voltage drop decrease and the sharp increase in current in the diode. The diac will remain in its conducing state until the current flow through it drops below a particular value known as the holding current. When the current falls below the holding current, the diac switches back to its high resistance, or nonconducting state.

Diac is used for smoothing the ac power The capacitor are in series with choke L across the triac that slows-up the voltage Thus a smooth control of the heat output from the heater is obtained Control the heater

Lamp Dimmer Circuit
It control the brightness or the colour of the light. Combinition of triac and diac in the circuit. Diac acts like an open circuit until the voltage across the capacitor is exceeds its breakover.
