Diabetes Expert System

This document presents an expert system developed for diagnosing and treating diabetes patients. It was created by a team of students and their advisor. The system aims to address problems with limited physician resources and help patients receive adequate care. It uses a knowledge-based approach with rule-based representation to make diagnoses and treatment recommendations based on collected patient information. The knowledge was acquired from medical experts and literature and implemented using the CLIPS expert system shell.

By:

Behailu G/mariam Dereje Mulugeta Freweyni T/michael Yemisrach Wordofa Yoseph Tesfaye

Advisor: Ato Endale Asefa (M.Sc)

Introduction
An expert system is a computer program that relies on knowledge and reason This system is developed using an ES for Diagnosing and treating of diabetics patient

February 17, 2013

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The reason what we have initiated to develop this

system is as follows:

The nature of diabetes is life long disease The limited number of physicians
The way Hospitals Give service to the patients
February 17, 2013 4

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

The portability of the system It serves as a physician

The patients get enough services and minimizes their time, cost and others

February 17, 2013

OBJECTIVES
To design a Knowledge Based Expert System for diagnosis and treatment of diabetes
To explore the applicability of an Expert System in diagnosis and treatment of diabetic patients.

February 17, 2013

Cont
To

overcome the un proportion number of patients and physicians

To recommend suggestions for further work in similar areas

February 17, 2013

Function of the project

Registered the patient

Diagnosed the patient

After diagnosis it recommend the possible medicine (Treatment) It gives enough information to increase the awareness
February 17, 2013 8

Knowledge Acquisition
It is the process of seeking out the knowledge required by an expert system In developing this project the knowledge is acquired from human experts, documents, books, sensors or computer files

February 17, 2013

Knowledge Representation
It deals how the acquired knowledge is represented in the form of rules The Knowledge of this project is represented in form of IF_THEN rules

February 17, 2013

10

Method of system development

A prototyping approach is followed The rule-based knowledge representation method is employed Rule based knowledge representation makes decision based on the knowledge stored.

February 17, 2013

11

Cont..
Rule based knowledge representation is easy to understand.
And also communicable because they are the natural form of knowledge .

February 17, 2013

12

Project development tool

CLIPS version 6.23 (an expert systems shell) Microsoft visual Basic HTML

February 17, 2013

13

SCOPE
The scope of this project is limited in the treatment and diagnosis of diabetics.

February 17, 2013

14

LIMITATIONS
In developing this project we have faced different problems

Time
Reference materials Cost The lack of cooperativeness of the experts
February 17, 2013 15

CONCLUSION
Expert systems are applicable in various areas Now in this century diabetes become one of the most miserable disease in the world CLIPS is one of the shells used to develop an Expert Systems
February 17, 2013 16

Cont
The main aim of this project is to develop a knowledge based Expert System for diabetes

The knowledge is acquired from the experts and the written documents in the area The acquired knowledge is structured in the form of hierarchy and rules are used in order to represent the knowledge

The user interface is both graphical user interface and

DOS
February 17, 2013 17

RECOMMENDATIONS
The government should give emphasis for the development of expert systems There should be seminars and discussions to aware the importance of expert system The Knowledge Base should be expanded through the involvement of large panel of experts February 17, 2013

18

Cont
In keeping with the view that knowledge is never complete, a self-learning system should be developed A way should be searched on how to integrate this KBS with currently existing systems

we recommend that, any one who is interested to add important features can modify this project
