Analysis of Variance: Randomized Design

The QC manager wants to determine if there are differences in the mean filling times of 3 machines. Workers were randomly assigned to the machines and their filling times recorded. One-way ANOVA will be used to analyze the data and test if the mean filling times are equal across machines at the 5% significance level. ANOVA assumptions of random sampling, normal distributions, and equal variances must be satisfied. If the F-statistic is greater than the critical value, the null hypothesis that the means are equal can be rejected, indicating at least one machine mean differs from the others.

Analysis of Variance :

Randomized Design
One-Way ANOVA : Motivation
As QC manager, you want to
see if 3 filling machines have
different mean filling times. You
assign 15 similarly trained
workers, 5 per machine, to the
machines. At the 5% level, is
there a difference in mean
filling times ?

Randomized Design
Machine is called the treatment / factor / independent
variable
We say machine A is treatment 1, machine B is
treatment 2, etc.
We may also say there is only 1 treatment with three
levels
Workers (experimental units) are assigned randomly to
the machines
Data collected this way are analyzed by one-way
analysis of variance (ANOVA)
Hypotheses of One-Way ANOVA

All population means are equal
Treatment effect is absent
