INTRODUCTION
COUNTRY He was a Portuguese explorer, one of
the most successful in the Age of Discovery and the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. This discovery was very significant and paved the way for the Portuguese to establish a long lasting colonial empire in Asia. He travelled to india twice, to Kenya, to Mozambique and to Calicut.

RELIGION
WHERE THEY RELIGIOUS?
Prince Henry's intention had been to find a sea route to India that would give Portugal access to the lucrative trade in spices from the Far East. He had hoped to be aided by an alliance with the elusive Prester John, whose Christian empire was thought to exist somewhere in Africa and who might have provided assistance to Christians in any fight to overcome Muslim dominance of the Indian Ocean trade. For 40 years, Henry sponsored voyages of exploration south along the west African coast, resulting in a lucrative trade in slaves and gold - but the southern extent of the continent remained unknown to Europeans, and the Prince's dream was not realised.

WEATHER
DID WEATHER AFFECT THEIR VOYAGES?
Setting off in July 1497, da Gama's expedition took advantage of the prevailing winds by sailing south down the coast of Africa, then veering far out into the Atlantic and swinging back in an arc to arrive off the southern African coast. This established a route still followed by sailing vessels.

DID HE PROVOKE COLONISATION?

The Portuguese were the first European nation to begin to develop a true maritime empire outside of the traditional Mediterranean or Baltic Seas. Their initial explorations down the west coast of Africa took many years and were slow in paying back any real benefits. The real reward was a delayed gratification and it would be the reaching of the Far East by Portuguese captains. Mombasa and Malindi are first included in the annals of Portuguese colonization with the name of Vasco da Gama. During his voyage to India, Vasco da Gama reached the area that is present day Kenya. The eastern areas of Africa had long since become predominately Muslim in culture. With the blended language known as Swahili and with its own sultans and sultanates, coastal Africa had over time become a very Muslim area, while the lands directly inland were controlled by traditional African tribes. Mombasa and Malindi are two modern Kenyan towns. Mombasa lying to the south and Malindi to the north.

DID HE DISCOVER NEW SPECIES?

Motivations for the voyage of discovery were mixed. As Gama acknowledged at the beginning of the narrative of his first voyage , In the year 1497 King Dom Manuel, the first of that name in Portugal, dispatched four vessels to make discoveries and go in search of spices.Adventure, colonization, commerce, and religion combined to send Gama in search of the sea route to India.

DID HE SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION OR OTHER MENTAL CONDITIONS? He was happily married with Catalina. They had 2 sons and 1 dauther He didnt suffer from any depression or mental problems

WAS HE PART OF THE NOBILITY OR HAVE A RELATIONSHIP TO IT?

Vasco da Gama was a minorPortuguese noble born in the 1460s, possibly in the southern Portuguese coastal town of Sines. Much of what we know about Gamas background and life are based on conjecture from notoriously inclusive and fragmentary surviving documents. There are huge gaps in our knowledge and much disagreement among historians over many of the details.
