Line- is a basic element of art, referring to a

continuous mark, made on a surface, by a moving point - can define a space, create an outline or pattern - absolutely essential in creating art

Shape- is an enclosed space


- are limited to two dimensions: length and width - geometric or organic Geometric- circles, rectangles, squares, triangles, etc. Organic- have natural, less well-defined edges

Form- is a three-dimensional geometrical

figure as opposed to a shape, which is a two-dimensional or flat Examples: sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, etc

Space- refers to distances or areas around,

between or within components of a piece - can be positive (white or light) or negative (black or dark), open or closed, shallow or deep and two-dimensional or

Texture- is used to describe either the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual feel of a twodimensional work

Value- refers to the brightness or darkness of

a color - becomes critical in a work which has no colors other than black, white, and a gray scale

Balance- is the way the elements are arranged


to create a feeling of stability in a work

Symmetrical- the parts of an image are

organized so that one side mirrors the other Asymmetrical- when one side of a composition does not reflect the design of the other

Movement- the illusion or suggestion of

motion in a work of art such as a sculpture or painting

Repetition- occurs when elements which have

something in common are repeated regularly or irregularly, sometimes creating a rhythm

Contrast- is the degree of difference between


any design element

Emphasis (dominance)- center of interest


- the focal point of an image, or when one area or thing stand out the most

Unity- means oneness, consistency or

integration - when all the elements and principles work together to create a pleasing image

Scale- means the size and weight of the


objects, shapes and forms

Variety- the use of differences and change to


increase the visual interest of the work
