Presentation by Pratik Kumar Singh Bcse-Iv Jadavpur University

This presentation accentuates the advantages of the most important methods of minutiae-based matching algorithm in fingerprint recognition systems. Minutiae matching is the most popular approach to fingerprint identification and verification. Fingerprint matching usually consist of two procedures: • Minutiae extraction • Minutiae matching. The performance mostly depends on the accuracy of the minutia extraction procedure. Minutiae matching designate the time complexity of applied solution.

Automated method of verifying a match between two
human fingerprints.
One of the forms of biometrics used to identify an
individual and verify their identity.

Impression of the friction ridges on all parts of the finger.
A friction ridge is a raised portion of the epidermis on the
fingers consisting of one or more connected ridge units of
friction ridge skin.
Serve in fine texture perception as it transmits signals to
sensory nerves when fingertips brush across an uneven
surface.
3 basic patterns of fingerprint ridges are found
Arch - ridges enter from one side of the finger, rise in the center
forming an arc, and then exit the other side of the finger.
Loop - ridges enter from one side of a finger, form a curve, and tend
to exit from the same side they enter.
Whorl - ridges form circularly around a central point on the finger

Most authentic and widely used technique for
matching.
Minutiae are extracted from the two
fingerprints and stored as sets of points in the
two- dimensional plane.
Matching essentially consists of finding the
alignment between the template and the input
minutiae sets that results in the maximum
number of minutiae pairings.
Lower-level features determined by singularities in
finger ridge
The two most prominent used features are :-
Ridge Ending
Ridge Bifurcation

Two approaches of minutia extraction
process :-
Ridge Thinning Method.
Contour Following Method.
Based on Crossing Number(CN) concept.
The binary ridge image needs further processing,
before the minutiae features can be extracted.
The first step is to binarizate and second is to
thin the ridges(Skeletonization), so that they are
single pixel wide.
The minutiae points are determined by scanning
the local neighbourhood of each pixel in the
ridge thinned image, using a 33 window

Based on chain code contour following.
As the contour of the ridges is traced consistently in a
counter-clockwise direction, the minutiae points are
encountered as locations, where the contour has a significant
turn.
The ridge end occurs as significant left turn and the
bifurcation as a significant right turn in the contour .
A minutiae-based fingerprint matching system
usually returns the number of matched
minutiae on both query and reference
fingerprints and uses it to generate similarity
scores.

Transformation of input minutiae set, is the most important step, in order
to maximize the value of similarity score.
Let map be transformation function that maps the minutia set from
I to I according to given geometrical
Transformation. Then, matching problem can be formulated as:

where:
n- is the number of minutiae points in I input set,
m- is the number of transformation equal to the number of minutiae in T
template set.
The fingerprints stability and uniqueness is well established.
It is estimated that the chance of two people, including twins,
having the same print is less than one a billion.

In this Presentation , a minutiae matching systems has
been described. Main problem in feature extraction section
is quality of fingerprint image. Low quality areas of
fingerprint contain large number of false minutiae point.
Most important in matching stage, is selection of tolerance
distances and transformation method. When tolerance
values are increasing, then false accept rate is also rising.
When transformation of input minutiae set is not precise,
then false reject rate value is high.
