Engineering Geology

This document discusses engineering geology and compares the ways geologists and engineers approach problems. It notes that geologists tend to use empirical, intuitive methods and answers based on experience, while engineers use precise analysis, calculations and theory-based answers. Engineering geologists combine both approaches. The document outlines typical specializations within geology and engineering, and training paths. It also describes the main aspects of engineering geology - site investigation, engineering geological mapping, material properties testing, instrumentation, and ground improvement. Finally, it provides examples of site investigation, mapping, instrumentation and material properties projects.

Material Properties
A state-of-the-art engineering geological
lab is under construction and will be
operating at the beginning of 2003. The
lab comprises the following sections:
Rock physical and mechanical properties testing
section.
Soil physical and mechanical properties testing
section.
Aggregate properties testing section.
Rock and soil samples preparation section.
In-situ testing and sampling section.
Geotechnical Instrumentation
Measurement of deformation using
extensometers is planned for the
slopes of Al Baha descend.
Various instrumentations will be
used in the investigations in the
Community Service Rapid
Response Project.
