Hovercraft

This document provides an overview of hovercrafts. It begins with an introduction that defines a hovercraft as a craft that can travel over land, water, mud, ice and other surfaces using a cushion of high-pressure air. It then describes how hovercrafts work by using a fan to force air under the craft and create lift. Additional engines can provide thrust for propulsion. Applications of hovercrafts include search and rescue, transportation in environmentally sensitive areas, flood control, and military and leisure uses. In conclusion, hovercrafts are described as efficient, rapid response vehicles that do not cause environmental pollution but require careful operation.

INTRODUCTION
Hovercraft is a craft capable of travelling over

land, water, mud, ice and other surfaces

Also called as ACV or Air Cushion Vehicle.
Operate by creating a cushion of high-

pressure air

Hovercraft

WORKING
Hovercraft float on a cushion of air that has

been forced under the craft by a fan. This

causes the craft to rise or lift.
Hovercraft can be powered by one or more
engines.
On vehicles with several engines, one usually
drives the fan, which is responsible for lifting.
Additional engines provide thrust in order to
propel the craft.

Some hovercraft use ducting to allow one

engine to perform both tasks.

It is done by directing some of the air to the
skirt, the rest of the air passing out of the
back to push the craft forward.
lift can range from 6" to 108" (152mm to
2,743mm) depending on the size of the
hovercraft
Steered by use of a system of rudders behind
the fan, controlled by handlebars up front.

WEIGHT CARRIED
The weight that can be carried in a hovercraft

is equal to cushion pressure multiplied by the

area of hovercraft
W=PA
Where, W = Weight to be carried in N
P = Cushion pressure in N/m2
A = Area of hovercraft in m2

APPLICATIONS
search and rescue

Transportation in environmentally sensitive areas where

habitat, erosion and soil compaction are concern

flood control
leisure sport and racing
Military services

CONCLUSION
Efficient, rapid response rescue vehicle
No environmental pollution
Careful driving is required
Stops by settling to the ground or water
