Cleaner Production

Cleaner production is a strategy for designing more eco-efficient corporate processes through optimizing products, production processes, and services. It aims to prevent pollution at the source through conserving raw materials, energy and water, and reducing emissions and waste. Implementing cleaner production can yield cost savings through reducing consumption, waste, and emissions while improving environmental performance and competitive advantage. A four step assessment methodology is used to identify cleaner production opportunities that are then evaluated for technical, economic, and environmental feasibility before selection and implementation.

WHAT IS CLEANER PRODUCTION???

Cleaner Production (CP) is a strategy for designing more ecoefficient corporate processes. This is achieved by optimizing the
products, the production processes and the services.
Most companies rely on expensive downstream environmental
protection technologies, for instance the subsequent filtration of
pollutants or waste-water treatment.
More and more companies realize, however, that preventive
measures, such as those achieved by Cleaner Production, can
reduce the burden on the environment and lower production
costs at the same time.
Moreover, conventional technologies for the protection of the
environment can be applied in a more targeted and efficient
way in the
framework of a CP strategy.

CLEANER PRODUCTION

is a Preventive Integrated Environmental Policy

applied to the entire Production and Service cycle

Products:

Reduction of waste
through better design
Use of waste for
new products

Processes:

Conservation of raw materials,

energy, water
Reduction of emission at source
Evaluation of technology option
Reduction of costs and risks

Services:

Efficient environmental
management in design
and delivery

Impacts:
Improved efficiency
Better environmental performance
Increased competitive advantage

CLEAN PRODUCTION ASSESSMENTS IN

INDUSTRIES
Cleaner Production assessment
methodology is used to systematically
identify and evaluate the Clean production
opportunities and facilitate their
implementation in industries

Assessment methodology is useful in

organizing the CP program in a company
and bringing together persons to be
involved with the development, evaluation,
and implementation of Cleaner Production
measures

STEP 1: PLANNING & ORGANIZATION

Elements important for the successful start of a Cleaner Production program:
Management commitment

Employee involvement

Cost awareness

Organize a project team

Identify barriers and solutions

Set plant-wide goals

Effective CP Planning Process ensures

Selection & implementation of the most cost effective CP options

Broader business planning investment analysis and decision-making

(such as capital budgeting and purchasing)

Cleaner Production objectives and activities are consistent with those

identified in the organizations broader planning process

STEP 2: PREASSESSMENT
Company description.
Process flow chart.
Walk through / side inspection

STEP 2: ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE

Source Identification material flow
diagram with associated costs made to
identify sources of waste and waste
generation

Cause Diagnosis investigation of

factors that influence the volume and
composition of waste and emissions
generated

Option Generation
create a vision on how to eliminate
or control each of the causes of
waste and emission generation
Option generation in turn considers
the following elements

STEP 3: FEASIBILITY STUDIES

Evaluates the technical and economic feasibility of options
Preliminary Evaluation

Options are sorted to identify additional evaluation needs for complex processes

Technical Evaluation

Availability and reliability of equipment

Effects on product quality and productivity

Expected maintenance and utility requirements

Operating and supervising skills

Economic Evaluation
Collection (regarding investments and operational costs, and benefits)
Evaluation criteria (pay back period, Net Present Value (NPV) or Internal Rate of Return) and feasibility options

Environmental Evaluation

Determine the positive and negative impacts of the option for the environment

Selection of Feasible options

Elimination of technically non-feasible and environmentally insignificant options

Selection of the right option in case of competing options or limited funds

STEP 4: IMPLEMENTATION AND CONTINUATION

Evaluates the feasible prevention measures which are implemented and provisions
taken to ensure the ongoing application of CP

Results of this step include:

Implementation of feasible CP measures

Monitoring and Evaluation of the progress achieved by the

implementation of the feasible options

Initiation of the ongoing CP activities

BENEFITS OF CLEANER PRODUCTION

Technology Modification single dry cleaning machine replace
two machines
40% reduction in operating costs
Electricity to clean each garment reduced by 17%
Negative pressure within the cage prevents pec fumes from entering the work
area
80% decrease in per consumption

Better equipment = Improved Safety

Improved Worker Productivity

BENEFITS OF CLEANER
PRODUCTION.
With the use of CP strategies companies can save money and
protect the environment.
CP is a proven method to identify savings potentials and to
develop tailor-made optimization measures. For this services such
as Quick Scan and CP assessments to clients or conduct applied
research projects to test and try innovative approaches.

Why does it make sense to apply

Cleaner Production in company?
The Cleaner Production strategy has already been tested in
many companies.
Large corporations often introduce Cleaner Production on their
own initiative.
Small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs), however, often do not
dispose of enough financial and technical means to conduct a CP
assessment and implement CP alternatives with their own
personnel resources. Therefore, SMEs need external support to
introduce CP in most cases.
The costs to identify or introduce new technologies and
processes are usually saved later or even surpassed, not to
mention the ecological and social benefits of the measures taken.

Why does Cleaner Production

(CP) yield cost savings?
The following measures can yield fast and noticeable
cost savings with a simultaneous increase of
environmental protection:
Saving costs by reducing consumption (material,
energy, etc.)
Sparingly using valuable resources
Eliminating avoidable waste and emissions
Rendering processes and quality assurance transparent
Optimizing processes by reviewing them
Reducing environmental pollution to a minimum
Using modern technologies and methods Safely
