What Is Engineering?

Engineering is the application of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems through design and construction. Engineers distinguish themselves by solving complex problems through rational thinking and logical decision making. Common engineering skills include problem solving, organization, communication, calculation, and design. Major engineering disciplines include civil, chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Engineering drawings communicate design specifications and requirements to various people involved in manufacturing and construction projects.

What is Engineering?

What is Engineering?
Engineering can be simply defined as
the application ofscientific
knowledgeto practical problems.
Science allows us to gain an
understanding of reality, of human
nature and of the
Universe.Engineering allows this
understanding to come to life
through problem solving, designing
andbuilding things.

What is Engineering?
Engineers can be distinguished from
other professions by their ability to
solve complex problems and
implement solutions in cost effective
and practical ways. This ability to
face a problem, work through various
thoughts and abstract ideas and then
translating them into reality is what
is so exciting about engineering.

Engineering now allows us

to do:
Fly through the air whilst sitting
comfortably in a chair commercial
aeroplane
Heat up a meal in under 5 minutes
microwave
Gain access to all of human
knowledge instantly google

Common skills engineers

use:
Engineers are:
Problem solvers,
Organizers,
Communicators,
Calculators and
Designers.
These skills rely heavily on:
Rational thinking and
Logical decision making, which is why most engineers come from
science and math backgrounds.
Yet despite this fact engineering isa highly creative activity, especially
when complicated problems are involved. The modern engineer is also
very software savvy and can use a range of different computing
programs to assist in verifying designs and predicting how structures
will behave in the environment.

Common fields of
engineering
Here are many branches and fields within
the variousengineering disciplineswhich
can be rather confusing. However, all
engineering degrees are based on one of
or a combination of the 4 major disciplines
Civil,
Chemical,
Mechanical&
ElectricalEngineering.

Example: Building a Tunnel

A civil engineer who specialises in
structural design (structural engineer)
would calculate the size of the tunnel, how
it is to be constructed (all of the stages)
and what it is made of (reinforced
concrete, etc.).
In order to provide clean air and remove as
much of the vehicle emissions as possible,
a mechanical engineer is employed to
design the ventilation system.

Example: Building a Tunnel

The mechanical engineer would plan for the
amount of emissions that need to be removed and
the process of removing them (for instance how
many of a particular type of fan would be required
and where they are to be installed). They also have
to figure out where this air flows to.
An electrical engineer will design the lighting as
well as any control systems for hazard signs. In
some cases, specialist disciplines such as
environmental engineering are used to conduct an
investigation into the sustainability and
environmental effects of building such a tunnel.

Engineering Drawing
Engineering drawing is the common language of engineering and
describes the process of creating drawings for any engineering or
architectural application.
Engineering drawings, produced according to accepted standards
and format, provide an effective and efficient way to communicate
specific information about design intent.
Engineering drawings are typically not open to interpretation like
other drawings, such as decorative drawings and artistic paintings.
A successful engineering drawing describes a specific item in a way
that the viewer of the drawing understands completely and without
misinterpretation.

Engineering Drawing
The term engineering drawing is also known as drafting,
engineering drafting, mechanical drawing,
mechanical
drafting, technical drawing, and technical drafting.
Drafting is a graphic language using lines, symbols, and
notes to describe objects for manufacture or construction.
Most technical disciplines use drafting, including
architecture, civil and electrical engineering, electronics,
piping, manufacturing, and structural engineering.
The term mechanical drafting has alternate
meanings. The manufacturing industry uses mechanical
drafting, with its name derived from mechanisms.

Manual drafting is a term that describes

traditional drafting practice using pencil or ink
on a medium such as paper or polyester film,
with the support of drafting instruments and
equipment.
Computer-aided drafting
(CAD) has taken the place of manual drafting.
CAD uses computers for drafting. CAD also
refers to computer-aided design when
computers are used to design.

Engineering drawings communicate a variety of concepts,

such as:
Engineering requirements,
Instructions,
and proposals,
to a variety of people, such as the many different individuals
often involved with a project.
An engineering drawing or a complete set of engineering
drawings provides:
All of the data required to manufacture or construct an
item or product, such
as a machine part, consumer product, or structure.
