Filter Press

Filter press is a solid-liquid separation equipment that uses pressure to force liquid through a filter medium, leaving solids behind. There are several types of filter presses, including plate and frame, belt, rotary drum, and centrifuge. Plate and frame filter presses contain alternating plates and frames with filter cloth that solids collect on, while belt filter presses use rolling belts to squeeze liquid from a slurry sandwich. Rotary drum and centrifuge filter presses use centrifugal force and rotating components to separate solids.

 Filter press is a solid-liquid separation equipment, which

are most commonly used filtration equipments.

 It has been used successfully in almost every industrial

filtration application over its 150 years of history.

Filter presses operate at very high pressures (from 5 to 15

bars and sometimes even more).

 A feeding pump is utilized to force the liquid

through the medium leaving the solid trapped
inside.
In filter presses, filter medium is a textile
fabric, such as canvas cloth, woven heavy
cloth, glass cloth, metal cloth and woolen
cloth.
Types of filter press
Plate & frame filter press

Belt filter press

Rotary drum filter press

Centrifuge filter press

PLATE & FRAME FILTER PRESS

Plate & frame filter press contains a set of

plates and frames designed to provide a series
of chambers in which solids may collect.
The plates are covered with a filter medium such
as canvas.
The plates and frame of a filter press may be
square or circular,
which are made
of cast iron, stainless steel,
Aluminum, lead,
wood
& hard rubber.
 Plates and frames set vertically in a metal rack, with
cloth covering the face of each plate, and are squeezed
tightly together by a screw or a hydraulic ram.
Slurry enters at one end of the assembly of plates
and frames.
It passes through a channel running lengthwise
through one corner of the assembly.

The solids are deposited on the cloth-covered faces

of the plates and liquid passes through the cloth.
 slurry is admitted from a pump or pressurized tank
usually at a pressure of 3 to 10 bar.
 Filtration is continued until liquor no longer flows out
the discharge.
Belt filter press

Belt filter press (sometimes called a belt

filter) is an industrial machine, used for solid-
liquid separation process. The process of
filtration is primarily obtained by passing a pair
of filtering cloth and belt through a system of
rollers.
Belt filter press
The feed is introduced from a hopper between two
filter cloths (supported by perforated belts) which pass
through an arrangement of rollers.

feed is sandwiched between two filter cloths (shown

green and purple).

As the belts are fed through the rollers, liquid is

squeezed out .

Fluid is extracted initially by gravity, then by

squeezing the cloth through rollers.
 When the belts pass through the final pair of rollers
in the process, Filtrate exits through a drain, the
filter cloths are separated and the filter cake is
scraped off into a suitable container.

Belt filter press is generally used in

 phosphatic fertilizer plants
 Dewatering of sludge’s in the chemical industry
 Mining of ores and water treatment.
Rotary-drum-filter press
Rotary-drum-filter is used for those slurries that
form a non-pours cake.
 A filter medium, such as canvas, covers the face of the drum,
which is partly submerged in the liquid.
 Under the slotted cylindrical face of the main drum is a
second, smaller drum which is connected by an internal pipes to
pump.
 In this picture, drum face is perforated through which liquid
is transfer to internal drum.
 As drum dips under the surface of the liquid, A layer of
solids builds up on the face of the panel as liquid is drawn
through the cloth into the compartment, through the internal
pipe into collecting tank. A pump is attached to central duct
to extract the filtrate from drum.
The drum rotates normally from 1 to10 RPM.
Advantages
Little manpower is required
 Constant cake production
 Low overall capital cost
 Small space
 Low overall energy consumption
 Low noise
Applications

Centrifuge filter press

Solids that form a porous cake can be separated from

a slurry by centrifuge filter press.
 It operates batchwise or in continuous fashion.
 Slurry is feed to a rotating basket having a perforated
wall covered with a filter medium such as metal
cloth.
 Pressure resulting from the centrifugal action.
 The shaft rotates at speed between 600 to 1800 rpm.
 The liquor passes through the filter medium and the solids are
retained by the medium.
 The cake is discharged by cutting it out with an unloader knife.

Applications of Centrifuge filter press:

To clean all types of lubricating oil, Ship, Vehicle, Generator,
etc.
It is used in sugar refining.
