Shims

Shims are thin pieces of material used to fill small gaps or provide level surfaces. They are commonly used to support equipment, adjust for better fit, or act as spacers. The document outlines the different types of shims, materials used, and requirements for shims according to API 686 standards for the oil and gas industries. Requirements include maximum numbers, heights, materials, flatness, and cut-out sizes. The purpose of these standards is to prevent soft foot issues where machines are not evenly supported.

NOTES ON SHIMS

The actual area of contact of the foot to the shims is

very important and should addressed in Soft-Foot
check list.
SOFT FOOT: is a common term used for
Machine or Mounting Frame distortion. The
distortion is caused when one or more feet of
a machine differ in height from the others.

NOTES ON SHIMS
PROCEDURE TO DETECT SOFT FOOT : First both Movable and Fixed Machine are to be mounted
on the Base frame and after shimming all the Bolts are to
be tightened.
Once all the bolts are tightened, the Dial gauge is
installed in one of the leg and calibrated to Zero.
Now loosen one bolt in the same leg, if there is any
deflection in Dial Gauge, then it indicates there is SoftFoot.
Based on deflection, Shims are added or removed from
the leg.
The same procedure will be repeated for all the legs.
