SHIMS REQUIREMENTS
AS PER API 686 FOR OIL & GAS INDUSTRIES
All Movable machine shall have min : 3mm Shim for each
Foot
Material of Shim
: SS 300 series
: 5 (five)
SHIMS REQUIREMENTS
Only one 3mm (0.125 in) or thicker shim per mounting
foot is allowed.
Shims shall have cut out minimum 6mm (0.25 in) larger
than the diameter of any Vertical Bolt.

Pre-Cut Shims can also be used.
Standard Shim thickness 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0,
3.0mm.

NOT TO BE USED: The use of Tapered Shims, Laminated or Peelable
Shims, Brass Shims, Aluminum Shims, Plastic Shims.
Shims thinner than 0.05mm (2 mils).
Rolled out Shims from Stock shall not be used.

NOTES ON SHIMS
LARGE SHIM : if the length is equal or greater than
150mm (6 in) or which have area equal or greater than
150 cm2 (25 in2).
SMALL SHIM : If the length is lesser than 150mm (6 in.)
or which have are less than 150cm2 (25 in2.).
FULL BEARING SHIM : Shims that match the
equipment foot load bearing area and outline are
considered to be Full-Bearing Shims.

PROCEDURE TO DETECT SOFT FOOT : First both Movable and Fixed Machine are to be mounted
on the Base frame and after shimming all the Bolts are to
be tightened.
Once all the bolts are tightened, the Dial gauge is
installed in one of the leg and calibrated to Zero.
Now loosen one bolt in the same leg, if there is any
deflection in Dial Gauge, then it indicates there is SoftFoot.
Based on deflection, Shims are added or removed from
the leg.
The same procedure will be repeated for all the legs.
