Sine Bar

A sine bar is a precision tool used to measure angles. It consists of a rigid bar with two precision-ground cylinders fixed at the ends. The bar top is parallel to an imaginary line through the cylinder centers. To measure an angle, one cylinder is placed on a level surface while the other is raised to the angle using gauge blocks. The angle is then calculated using the sine rule and the distance between cylinders and height of blocks. Sine bars can accurately measure angles up to 60 degrees and are useful for checking manufactured part angles.

What is Sine Bar???

Asine barconsists of a hardened, precision

ground body with two precision ground cylinders

fixed at the ends.
The top of the bar is parallel to a line through

the centers of the two rollers.

The dimension between the two rollers is chosen to be a

whole number (for ease of later calculations) and forms

thehypotenuseof a triangle when in use.

Principle
Angles are measured using a sine bar with the

help of gauge blocks and adial gaugeor

aspirit level. The aim of a measurement is to
measure the surface on which the dial gauge
or spirit level is placed horizontally.

How To Use..
When a sine bar is placed on alevel surfacethe top edge

will be parallel to that surface.

If one roller is raised by a known distance, usually
usinggauge blocks, then the top edge of the bar will be
tilted by the same amount forming an angle that may be
calculated by the application of thesine rule.

How To Use..
The hypotenuse is a constant dimension

(100mm, 10inches and 5 inches).

The height is obtained from the dimension
between the bottom of one roller and the
table's surface.
The angle is calculated by using the sine rule-

Applications

Measuring known angles or locating any work to a given

angle.
For this purpose the surface plate is assumed to be having a
perfectly flat surface, so that its surface could be treated as
horizontal. One of the cylinders or rollers of sine bar is placed on
the surface plate and other
roller is placed on the slip gauges of height h.

Checking of unknown angles.

For example, to measure the angle of awedge, the wedge is
placed on a horizontal table. The sine bar is placed over the
inclined surface of the wedge. At this position, the top surface of
the sine bar is inclined the same amount as the wedge. Using
gauge blocks, the top surface is made horizontal. The sine of the
angle of inclination of the wedge is the ratio of the height of the
gauge blocks used and the distance between the centers of the
cylinders.

Advantages Of Sine Bar

The sine bar is especially useful in measuring or checking angles

when the limit of accuracy is 5 minutes or less.

Its very convenient method of accurate and precise

measurements and checking unknown angles of manufactured

part or component with the use of calibration grade linear
measurement devices (i.e. Slip gauges).
Simple procedure which does not require skilled operation .

Disadvantages Of Sine
Bar

Sine bars cannot be used for conveniently for

measuring angles more than 60 deg. Because of

slip gauge adjustment problems.
Misalignment of work piece with sine bar may
sometimes introduce considerable errors.
