The Impacts of Extreme Weather and Climate Events On Aviation

This document examines the impacts of extreme weather and climate events on aviation. It discusses how less attention has been given to the potential impacts of climate change on air safety. The study focuses on the implications of climate events like wind shear, lightning, thunderstorms, snowstorms and sandstorms on flight operations. Various figures and tables show trends in fatal accidents from 1950-2009 and how different weather events can impact flight delays, safety, and operations. Weather is a major factor that can affect aviation safety and is one of the leading causes of flight delays and cancellations. Extreme weather like thunderstorms, icing, turbulence and low ceilings/visibility present hazards to aviation.

Introduction

Although
many
are
seeking
a
more
sustainable aviation system through the
development of many ingenious devices,
improvement in aircraft design, power plants,
radio aids and navigation techniques but less
attention has been given to the potential
impacts of climate change on air safety.
So that, this study focuses on the implications
of climate change/extreme episodic events
(wind
shear,
lightning,
thunderstorm,
snowstorm,
and
sandstorm)
on
flight
operations.

January 2001 to July 2002. Delay hours peaked at 50,000 hours
per month in August 2001, declined to less than 15,000 per
month for the months following September 11, but exceeded
30,000 per month in the summer of 2002. Weather delays
comprise the majority of delays in all seasons.
