"The Ideal Diode": AV-241 Electronics-I

This document is a lecture on the ideal diode. It discusses the objectives of understanding what an ideal diode is and its applications. An ideal diode is defined as a fictitious two-terminal non-linear element used to model the basic operation of a practical diode. It allows current to flow freely in one direction but blocks current completely in the reverse direction. Examples of ideal diode applications discussed are rectifiers, which allow alternating current to be converted to direct current, and logic gates in digital circuits.

DIODE APPLICATION
PN junction (Diode) are used in most semiconductor
devices
Transistors
LEDs
Solar cells
Semiconductor lasers
Next we will discuss two major applications of
diodes
Rectifiers
Logic gates

DIODE APPLICATION : RECTIFIER

DIODE APPLICATION : RECTIFIER

Example 3.1
If sinusoidal source is 24V peak, find fraction of a cycle that diode conducts?
Also find peak diode current and max value of diode reverse voltage.

DIODE APPLICATION : LOGIC GATES

Figure 3.5 Diode logic gates: (a) OR gate; (b) AND gate
(in a positive-logic system).

Assignment No. 1
Q1. With reference to Figure 3.5 (b), explain that the circuit represents an
AND gate. Also make a TRUTH TABLE that describes the logical AND
function for this circuit
Q2. Solve Example 3.1 if 12V battery is replaced by 6V battery.
Q3. Solve Example 3.1 if polarity of diode is switched.
