ACTIVITIES Teaching as a Career

TEACHERS
STANDARD: 4.12.03
Teachers are described as being reflective practitioners. Describe
what this means in your own words.
Describe three different situations a teacher may encounter
during a regular school day.
Trade papers with a partner and write your decision about the
situation down. Discuss with your partner the choices you made
and explain them.
Be sure to consider legal and ethical restrictions on educators.
SCHOOLS
STANDARDS: 4.13.04
Bell-work: Describe what you believe makes a school good.
The following items are considered to correlate with high achieving schools:
High expectations for student performance, Communication among teachers, task orientation amongst
staff, ability to keep students on task, the expenditure of little time on behavior management, the
principals instructional leadership, the participation of parents, and the school environment.

Consider current education policy within the country, state, school district, or school building.

How do you believe policies within the state, school district, or school building impacted teaching?

Create a three minute video, three minute educational speech, informative poster(electronic OR on
paper) about your thoughts on how policies have impacted individual classrooms.
CURRICULUM
STANDARDS:4.09.02
Bell-work: Explain the positive and negative impact standards based curriculum may have on what
students learn.

Give the class a topic to create a short lesson and the other a standard to create a short lesson. (You
may group students up to work together on this project)

Students will conduct the lesson.

After all lessons are finished, have students reflect on how well the lessons without the standards went vs.
the lessons without the standards. Discuss as a class the negative and positive aspects of standards.
ASSESSMENT
STANDARDS:4.06.02
Bell-work: Using a Venn diagram, compare and contrast the
following types of assessment: Forced Choice, Essay, Short-written,
Oral reports, teacher observation, student self-assessment,
performance tasks

Create a comic strip visually representing each type of


observation.
Describe which type of assessment you think is the most
beneficial for students AND teachers.
TECHNOLOGY
STANDARDS: 4.05.02
Bell-work: Describe your favorite technology used by students in
the classroom. What are the benefits of the technology? What are
the drawbacks of the technology?

Compile a list of 5 different technologies or websites that are


usable for students in the classroom. Describe what they are, how
they are used, and determine their effectiveness in the classroom.

Present the list of technologies to the class.


CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
STANDARDS:4.07.01
Bell-work: Describe the best and worst class environment youve been in without using
teacher names. Explain what made the environment effecting for learning and what
inhibited learning.

Develop a classroom management plan:


Draw and create a layout (or create an electronica version) of your future classroom. Describe in a
summary why you placed specific items in the room and why you placed items in certain areas.
Develop a set of 5 rules for your class.
Based on the level of education you plan on teaching, develop a schedule for a day (if elementary/early
childhood education) or a class period (if you plan on teaching middle or high school.
Write a brief summary of why you believe the schedule and rules you develop will enhance the learning
environment.
PHILOSOPHICAL
FOUNDATIONS
STANDARDS:4.12.01 4. Teaching Methods:
How should a teacher approach new concepts?
Bell-work: Define philosophy. How should a teacher teach their students?
Develop a philosophy of education with the Hands-on, Lecture, etc.

SOCIETY INFLUENCES
STANDARDS: 4.13.02
Bell-work: Society has a major impact on what happens in classrooms. Describe a
current event and what its impact has been in a class you are taking.

Break students into two groups. Assign them a stance on a policy within your
school. Give students time to come up with research defending their side of the
debate. Students should come up with three reasons why their stance is the correct
stance. Have the students develop a closing statement for a final plea.
Have students debate. (Each side gives their three reasons and a closing statement)
When finished, have students reflect on their debate/stance. Have them decide
which side they agree with and why.
ETHICAL/LEGAL ISSUES
STANDARDS:4.12.03 AND
4.12.04
Bell-work: There are many times that there are teachers on the
front page of the news. What are things you have seen in the news
regarding teachers previously? Was the story positive or negative?
Find three current events regarding teachers in the news.
Describe the situations, the outcome of the event, and your own
personal opinion about the event.
Summarize your role as a teacher to follow legal and ethical
behaviors, and what consequences you might face if you do not
follow the legal or ethical guidelines.
GOVERNING/FUNDING
STANDARDS: 4.13.04
Bell-work: School funding has been a hot topic in the news in
Kansas. What are your thoughts about how schools are funded in
Kansas? Have you been impacted by any cuts?

Interview the following types of people about their opinions about


school funding: teacher, student, and parent. You must ask at least
15 open ended questions. Record their answers. Write a brief
summary of what you learned from this experience.
TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES
STANDARDS: 4.12.02
Bell-work: List as many items that teachers are responsible for that
you can in 2 minutes. Compare lists with the class.

Create a presentation that addresses the following:


Teacher responsibilities within the classroom
Teacher responsibilities outside of the classroom
Based on your teaching experience so far, what can you refine to enhance your
performance on the responsibilities listed on the prior slides.
PLANNING TO BECOME A
TEACHER
STANDARDS: 4.13.03
Bell-work: Many teachers return to school after they are teaching to receive their
Masters degree. What are the benefits for teachers who receive another degree?

Explore the options for teachers inside a school district besides being in the
classroom. Choose one and answer the following questions:
What are the requirements for this position?
What is the pay difference between a teaching position and this position?
What is the schedule like?
What are the job duties?
How do the responsibilities change as you advance in the career?
Determine if this is a position you might be interested in.
STUDENTS
STANDARDS: 4.02.01
Bell-work: Create an activity based on the Multiple Intelligences Theory
Your activity must include at least 3 of the 8 intelligences.
You can use an activity you have done in a class previously OR search on the internet for ideas
Your activity should be explained either on a sheet of paper or you can type it and turn it into my hand-in folder
Go to ksde.org and choose two different schools to compare their building report cards.
List the two schools you are comparing
List different percentages of diversities that make up our school, ie Race, Socioeconomic status, graduation
rate, etc.
List different percentages of diversities that make up the other school (the same that you found for our school)
Summarize what you found (based on the differences and similarities of the schools you researched), and
describe the implications that teachers at each school may encounter. Once youve listed the implications,
explain how they can overcome the implications.
HISTORY OF EDUCATION
STANDARDS:4.13.04
Bell-work: Explain one law/policy that you believe has had the largest impact on
education. Describe if the law/policy impacted education in a positive or negative way.
Create a timeline over the 19th and 20th century of education
You must include people, laws, beliefs, etc.
You must have at least 10 pictures on the poster.
Neat/organized
You may use the timelines in the An Introduction to Education textbook in chapter 8,
but you should not include EVERYTHING on the timeline. Pick out what you think is most
important.
Give a brief summary of each item you include on the timeline.
