LTE Frame and Channels

The document discusses resource blocks, scheduling blocks, and channels in LTE frames. It defines a resource block as 12 subcarriers of 15kHz bandwidth for 0.5ms, providing 180kHz of bandwidth. A scheduling block extends this to 1ms in time. The smallest unit in an LTE frame is a symbol, with each time slot of 0.5ms containing 7 symbols. Each resource block carries data depending on modulation: 168 bits for QPSK, 336 bits for 16QAM, and 504 bits for 64QAM. Downlink channels like BCCH, CCCH, DCCH, DTCH are mapped to physical channels like PDSCH, with PDCCH indicating their allocation and PHICH carrying ACKs/

LTE Frame and

Channels

-Pratit Khare
What is Resource Block ?
Bandwidth is divided in to subcarriers.
Each subcarrier=15KHz
If we combine 12 subcarriers in Frequency domain for
0.5 ms I will call this a Resource Block.

1 RB=12 subcarrier=12*15KHz= 180KHz in

Frequency domain

1RB=0.5ms in time domain

Again, If I combine 12 Subcarriers in Frequency

domain. But, In time domain If I extend this time to
1ms then It will become a Scheduling Block

1 SB= 12 subcarriers in Frequency domain

1SB=1ms in Time domain

LTE Frame Structure
In Frequency domain
12 subcarriers=12*15KHz=180KHz

In Time domain
1 LTE Frame=10ms
1 LTE Frame=10 LTE subframes=20 LTE Time
slots=10ms
1 LTE subframe=1ms
1LTE Time slot=0.5ms
What is symbol/Resource Element in
LTE Frame

-Smallest unit of LTE frame is called a

symbol.

-1 Time slot (0.5ms) can be divided in to 7

symbols.

-1 RB=7*12=84 symbols

-1SB=2*(7*12)=168 symbols
For QPSK Modulation (2 bits per
symbol)
1RB carries=84*2=168 bits

For 16QAM Modulation (4 bits per

symbol)
1RB carries=84*4=336 bits

For 64QAM Modulation (6 bits per

symbol)
1RB carries=84*6=504 bits
LTE Downlink Channels
Channel Mapping: Downlink
BCCH/BCH/PBCH
Broadcast System Information (MIB):
-DL-Bandwidth
-PHICH Configuration
-System Frame Number

BCCH/DL-SCH/PDSCH
Broadcast System Information (SIBs):
Like SIB1,SIB2, SIB3,SIB4 etc. (They
carries information like Cell Access, Cell
selection, cell reselection etc).
CCCH/DL-SCH/PDSCH
-Used for Common control information when
there is no RRC Connection is present.
-Used to deliver initial RRC Messages. (like RRC
Connection Request & RRC Connection Setup)

DCCH/DL-SCH/PDSCH
-Used for Dedicated control information.
-RRC Messages including NAS messages.
For e.g. RRC Connection setup complete carries
NAS PDU=Attach request.

DTCH/DL-SCH/PDSCH
It carries normal dedicated user traffic
PDCCH (Physical Downlink Control Channel)
PDCCH tells about what kind of information is
coming on PDSCH. It depends on MAC-IDs carried
by PDCCH:
-SI-RNTI
-RA-RNTI
-P-RNTI
-TC-RNTI
-C-RNTI

PCFICH (Physical Control Format Indicator)

It carries CFI whose value can vary from 1 to 4
and it tells how many OFDM symbols are
occupied by PDCCH channel in current subframe.
PHICH (Physical Hybrid-
ARQ Indicator Channel)
It is used just to send
ACK/NACK in downlink for an
uplink message.
Signals
Synchronization Signals
P-SS (Primary Synchronization Signal)
It tells about:
-Cell ID (0,1 and 2)
-Slot Time Detection/slot synchronization
S-SS (Secondary Synchronization signal)
It tells about:
-Cell ID group
-Frame time detection
Then UE find out PCI (Physical Cell ID)
PCI=3*Cell ID group + Cell ID
Reference Signals
Used for Downlink Channel
estimation. It contains RSRP
and RSRQ. Based on these
parameters UE camps on a
particular cell.
