Kashmir Case Study
Kashmir Case Study
India and Pakistan have gone through three separate wars over the territorial
dispute involving Kashmir since both were declared independent nations in 1947.
This dispute poses a threat to the political stability of South Asia and the
economic well-being of the countries involved.
Due to both India and Pakistan having nuclear weapons, the Kashmir conflict has
the potential to lead to nuclear war.
Resources such as a deal with critical water supplies from Kashmir might be a
way for India and Pakistan to come to terms over this dispute.
Politics and Religion
India in 1947, had a majority Hindu population while Pakistan was mostly
Muslim.
Britain gave each Indian state the choice of joining either country or remaining
independent. Muslim states joined with Pakistan, while Hindu states remained
part of India.
Kashmir was and still has a majority Muslim population but during
independence, the territory was ruled by a Maharajah that was Hindu.
The Maharajah tried to cede his territory to India but Pakistani soldiers invaded
and after a year of inconclusive fighting, India still controlled much of the territory.
Timeline of the Dispute
1947- India and Pakistan gain independence
The Indus River flows through Kashmir, and many of its tributaries originate in the
territory.
As a result, the Pakistanis are unwilling to let India control such a vital
resource.

been used to educate educate millions of children and to address many social
problems.

Kashmir the peace they need to begin improve the quality of their lives.
