Announcement: The Seminar Is COMPULSORY For All Foundation Students

Here are the key steps: (a) When t = 0, the exponential function reduces to the initial amount, which is 13 kg. (b) To find the mass after 45 days, we substitute t = 45 into the exponential function: m(45) = 13e-0.015(45) = 6.619 kg So the amount of mass remaining after 45 days is approximately 7 kg.

Announcement

Open Innovation Category ( EDX ) Seminar

Speaker : Mr. Bugs Tan
Topic : Developing and Managing Innovation &
Creativity
Date : 10 September 2008 ( Wednesday )
Time : 2.30 – 4.30 pm
Venue : Chancellor Hall
The seminar is COMPULSORY for all Foundation students.
Solution Quiz 3 (Exercise 44 page 217)
 if d=10 and s=L so
d=c s^2(3L-s) after calculation we find c=0.05%
 if d=0.5 and we know c from previous so
0.5=cs^2 (30-s) then -c s^3+30 c s^2-0.5=0.
it is enough to prove that exist a zero between 6.5 and 6.6, so to do this
we use theorem:
we call f(s)= c s^3+30 c s^2-0.5, as f(6.6)*f(6.5)<0 so
there exist a root between them.
Exponential Functions

An exponential function is a function

of the form y  a  b ,
x

where a  0, b  0, and b  1,
and the exponent must be a variable.
Let’s take a look at an
exponential function
x y
y2 x

0 1
1 2
2 4
-1 1/2
-2 1/4
Let’s change the base b
to positive values

What conclusion can

we draw ?
Observe what happens when b assumes a
value such that 0<b<1.

Can you explain why

this happens ?
y  a b x

To see what impact ‘a’ has on our graph

we will fix the value of ‘b’ at 3.

What does a larger

value of ‘a’
accomplish ?
What happens when a<0
y  a  b where a  0, b  0 and b  1
x
Example:
Find the exponential function whose graph is given :
f(x)

(4,16)

(0,1)

It shows when x = 4 , then f  x = 16 , hence a4 =16

 
thus a = 2 and f x = 2x
The Natural Exponential Function.
The natural exponential function is the exponential function given by:
f  x  e x

with base e. It is often referred as the exponential function.

The value of e is given by : e = 2.718281.
Example: An infectious disease begins to spread in a city of

population of 50,000. The number of persons who

are infected within three days is modeled by the
50 ,000
function: p t  
5  1253e 0.88 t

(a) How many infected persons were there initially ?

(b) Determine the number of infected people after one day,
and one week.
(a) t = 0, hence
50 ,000 50 ,000
p 0     0.88   0    40
5  1253e 1258

50,000 50,000
(b) t = 1 p 1   0.88  1 / 3
  9234
5  1253e 5.417

50,000 50,000
t = 7 p 7   5  1253e  0.88 7 / 3  7.6466  6539
Exercise

• A radioactive substance decay in such a way

that the amount of mass remaining after t days is
given by the function
m(t )  13e 0.015 t

• where m(t) is measured in kg.

• (a) Find the mass at time t = 0.
• (b) How much of the mass remains after 45
days?
Solution

• (a) m(0) = 13 kg.

• (b) m(45) = 13 e-0.015(45) = 6.619 kg. Thus the mass of

the radioactive substance after 45 days is about 7 kg.
