THE CONCEPT OF

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

1
Defining the Concept of Sustainable
Development
The concept of sustainable development is
still being developed and the definition of the
term is constantly being revised, extended
and redefined.
you can try to formulate your own definition
as you learn more about the relationships
among its main components.

2
Components of Sustainable
Development
Economic, social, and environmental
factors
You decide on their relative
significance based on your own
system of values

3
General Definition of Sustainable
Development

Development is sustainable if it meets

the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.
(United Nations World Commission on Environment and
Development in 1987)

4
Objectives of Sustainable
Development

5
The Famous Rio Declaration
Adopted by the United Nations Conference
on Environment and Development in 1992
(also called the Earth Summit, held in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil), puts it this way:
Human beings are at the center of concern
for sustainable development. They are
entitled to a healthy and productive life in
harmony with nature.
6
Movement Towards the Concept of
Sustainable Urban Development
Estimated 70% of world population
live in urban by 2050.
This is a tremendous change which
will have an impact both on the
millions of people that move and on
the cities that they move into.

7
Movement Towards the Concept of
Sustainable Urban Development
However cities also offer
opportunities; humans are social
creatures.
Roles of urban spaces to encourage
social connections.
Such a change provides planners and
developers with a challenge.
8
Movement Towards the Concept of
Sustainable Urban Development

urban systems can be more

environmentally sustainable than rural or
suburban living,
where in rural and suburban areas people
may be further from each other, from
essential services and from the workplace.

9
Movement Towards The Concept of
Sustainable Urban Development

In urban area,
people and resources located so close to

one another it is possible to save energy

and resources by the effective planning of
services such as
food transportation and mass transit systems.
Cities also benefit the economy by
bringing people together in one relatively
small area where ideas can easily be
10
generated and developed.
The Concept of Sustainable Urban
Development
Urban sustainability is the idea that a city
can be organized without excessive
reliance on the surrounding countryside
and be able to power itself with renewable
sources of energy.

11
The Concept of Sustainable Urban
Development
The aim of this is to
produce the lowest quantity of pollution

possible
to efficiently use land, compost used
materials, recycle it or convert waste-to-
energy
to make the citys overall contribution to
climate change minimal.
12
Urban and Industries
Urbans stimulate both supply and demand in the
economy.
Urbans need lots of the things but they can provide lots
of things as well.
Many industries available in urbans
Service industry
Health industry
Tourism industry
Technological industry etc.
This provides opportunities for employment and
economic success.
13
Issues and challenges
However, things can go wrong in cities.
If their systems are not well organised or
maintained they can have a large negative
impact on the environment.
they may use large amounts of energy
which have been generated in
unsustainable ways.
they may poison the land and pollute the
atmosphere. 14
Issues and Challenges
Technology has a large part to play in
enabling positive outcomes for cities.
The solutions being developed today will
be critical in ensuring that the cities of
tomorrow represent a positive and
sustainable development
